Port-Vendres is on the Mediterranean coast south of the Pyrenees. It is 2 km from Collioure (photo) -'village of the Impressionists' and about 15km from the Spanish border.
It is an active fishing port so the village remains lively even in the winter months - there is even a cinema. The scenery is beautiful and there are superb walks along the coast or up into the Pyrenees.
With a car there is a lot to explore - from Cathar castles in France to 'Dali country' in Spain.
Port-Vendres is animated by its small working port, which is sometimes visited by cruise liners and the arrival each day of the fishing boats with their catches of anchovies, tuna, etc., which are sold at the fish market or from the boats themselves. The Palm-lined yachting harbour quayside has an abundance of shops, cafes and seafood restaurants and the Place Castellane provides a venue for open-air dances and the many cultural festivities.
