Wine tasting:
Burgundy is world-famous for the elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir produced in the region. From Beaune, situated right in the heart of Burgundy, you can explore the Côte-de-Nuits between Beaune and Dijon - best known for its red wine, including the mythical Romanée-Conti. Vineyards south of Beaune are known as the Côte-de-Beaune and include villages such as Pommard, Volnay and Meursault. Here you will find the equally mythical vineyard of Le Montrachet. Tastings are possible at the cellars but it is preferable to make an appointment in advance. We can assist you in this regard. Some of the larger 'negociants' - wine traders - are open to the public, offering informative guided tours in several languages. A large number of wine shops offer wine for every taste and budget. Several wine bars and most restaurants offer local wine by the glass. The extensive Atheneum shop in central Beaune - open 7 days a week - stocks virtually every imaginable wine book and wine accessory.
Fine dining:
The impressive number of fine restaurants in Beaune and its neighbouring villages can probably be attributed to the local wine culture. A few addresses that stand out:
Beaune: Ma Cuisine, Le Benaton, Jardin des Remparts, L'Ecusson
Pernand-Vergelesses: Le Charlemagne
Chagny: Lameloise
Puligny-Montrachet: Le Montrachet
Levernois: Hostellerie de Levernois
Mercurey: Hôtellerie du Val d'Or
A great address for families is Au Bon Accueil at La Montagne de Beaune with a lovely view over Beaune and its vineyards as a bonus.
Cycling and hiking:
Cyclists flock to Beaune from all over the world to explore the vineyards and villages on two wheels. The rolling landscape makes for leisurely riding and well-indicated cycling routes are a definite plus.
Well-trained cyclists wander into the direction of the Hautes Côtes where vineyards and pastures with grazing cattle lie offer variation to the eye.
Hikers are spoilt for choice and several routes start at the Bouzaise park, 2 minutes' walk from the house. The quaint village of Saint-Romain's hiking routes deserve a special mention.
Golf:
Levernois, one of the prettiest villages in the Côte d'Or is situated 5km from Beaune. It boasts a well-maintained 18-hole golf course as well as a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course. The driving range situated, right next to the Bouzaise river, is hardly ever crowded.
The clubhouse offers light meals and the well stocked pro shop offers everything a golfer may need. The friendly and efficient pro, Christophe Ormancey, offers individual and group lessons for gentlemen, ladies and juniors. Chalon-sur-Saone, about 20km from Beaune, has its own golf course and the Dijon course, about 40km away, is known for its special beauty.
