Casa Merlot lies in the delightful unspoilt village of Pinos del Valle situated in the Lecrin valley. It is an old Moorish village set high in the mountains overlooking the valley and its man made lake towards the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Las Alpujarras. The village has all the facilities to make your stay comfortable i.e. chemist, bank, shop, bars. I can recommend the Tapas bar, BAR VENITIA, to sit on the sun terrace and to enjoy a cool beer is a great way to relax. Nearby are the towns of Lanjaron and Orgiva (driving over lemons) with there many shops and restaurants. There is a bar, bakers and shop within 5 minutes walking distance this certainly makes life easier for your driver, especially if they want to have a drink in the evening.

The lecrin valley looks onto the snow capped Sierra Nevada mts. Our village looks onto the gr7 walking route. The valley is very green and lush if you walk round the lake you will see, bamboo (no tigers) grape vines, lemons and orange groves.

Walking: The owners are both very keen walkers and they are only to happy to let you accompany them on walks. They have an itinerary of waymarked walks so you don't need a map they usually start and finish at bar Venicia so you can finish with a cool beer before the short walk back to Casa Merlot. If you want something more challenging (high plains drifting) we have waymarked a 1750 m mountain only 20min drive. We can offer advice on 3000mts mountains close by.

Cycling and diving/sailing/wind surfing: The Sierra Nevada mountains has the highest tarmac road in Europe. It is a huge draw for anybody who likes the challenge King of the Mountains. The traffic level is much lower than England, but the weather in winter is what I call sun-glass weather. Mountain biking is another way to explore this area. Just follow your nose and wander off into one of the last great wildernesses in Europe. When it gets really hot you might wish to try scuba diving we can put you in touch with a qualified instructor, he can offer a taster dive or a full range of diving opportunities. We can now offer the opportunity to go sailing, windsurfing or canoeing if you fancy something a little faster you can hire a jet ski.

Other: The Costa Tropica with its wonderful beaches and coves is 20 minutes away. The city of Granada with the Alhambra Palace is 25 minutes to the north. Eating out at the many restaurants in the area is very cheap £20 for food and wine for two people.

Ski: SOL Y NIEVE is 50 minutes from Pinos, there are facilities for skiing and snowboarding, the season runs from November to April.

My wife and I had a great holiday at Casa Merlot. The accommodation was a traditional Spanish village house with a roof terrace that had panoramic views of the surrounding hills. It was amazing to be awoken by the smell of freshly baking bread from the local bakery which was 30 metres from the house. The bread and croissants tasted superb. We did quite a bit of walking locally through plantations of olive, orange, lemon, grape, pomegranate, avocado, apple and almond trees - it was really wonderful to see the abundance of fruit on many of the trees. Opportunities to eat out within walking distance were limited but El Pinar, a local alojamiento (inn), provided a range of tasty meat and fish dishes at a reasonable price.
Granada to the north and Salobrena and other coastal resorts to the south were easily accessible via the toll-free motorway that was about a five minute drive from the house. Both Granada and the coast were about 35 kilometres from Pinos.
Driving to other locations such as Lanjaron and the hill villages of the Alpujarras was easy but quite slow on winding mountain roads. It is certainly worth doing as the views were tremendous.
Our outstanding memory of this holiday is the friendliness of the local people, young and old, who without fail would always greet you with a "Hola! bueno dia".
It is well worth a visit.
