The heart of this historic old town is just a short walk away, as is spectacular Lake Windermere, with its water sports and cruises. Ambleside sits on the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake, and makes an excellent base for touring the central Lakes with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley a short drive away. There is lots to do here - boat trips, cruises and watersports on Lake Windermere and plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead there is a short stretch of beach for you to enjoy, whilst a stroll in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will take you to the spectacular waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Apart from the Lake and the superb walking on offer, Ambleside is also renowned for its yearly rushbearing ceremony and the 17th Century 'Bridge House' and is one of the most photographed buildings in the whole of the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
