The quaint Lakeland village of Troutbeck is situated between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, nearby is the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of cottages, houses and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane that is bordered by a drystone wall. Most of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with original features like mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end has its own 17th Century Inn. Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, offering a range of amenities to suit every taste. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. There is a fascinating collection of boats at the 'Windermere Steamboat Museum' whilst children will really enjoy the 'World of Beatrix Potter' in Bowness, where technology actually brings her characters to life.
