Kirkcudbright is a historic and picturesque town resting on the banks of the tidal waters of the River Dee, on the north Solway shore. The town was established as a Royal burgh in 1455, giving it status to trade with ports outside Scotland, and has always been supported by a busy fishing trade. Behind this working harbour, is a very attractive town centre, complete with mystic ruined McLellan's Castle. Also worth a visit is the interesting Stewartry Museum, housing a collection of items representing the life and times on the Solway coast. Kirkcudbright is also known as the artists' town, established by Edward Hornel in the late nineteenth century and still the case today, with an excellent collection of art galleries, crafts, antique shops and cafes. The area offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with beautiful coastal landscapes and plenty to offer for the whole family. Amenities: Gas central heating.
