About the Area: Barnard Castle 10 miles. Baldersdale is a dale branching off Teesdale, it consists of a small cluster of hamlets and farm dwellings, overlooking the reservoirs of Hury, Blackton and Balderhead. Baldersdale came to be renowned as the home of Hannah Hauxwell ( she featured on television in the 1970s for single-handedly running her farm from her home, which had no running water ). 'Hannah's Meadow' is today managed by Durham Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. Nearby is the village of Romaldkirk, one of the most unspoilt villages in Teesdale, with beautiful greens, a beautiful old church, old stone cottages and two pubs - one of which won AA Pub of the Year for England in 2003 and serves very good restaurant and bar meals. The dale is amidst breathtaking Dales countryside and makes a perfect base for walking and touring throughout North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales. There are excellent fell, flat and river walks and cycle rides available right from the doorstep. Within easy driving distances are the northern Lakes and the cities of Durham and Newcastle, while the ancient market town of Barnard Castle, and its historical and cultural attractions, is only a 15 minute drive away.
