The village of Lanchester is set in the magnificent countryside of County Durham, about eight miles to the west of the ancient City of Durham. The village got its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium located half a mile south-west of Lanchester. Today the Roman connection attracts archaeologists and historians to the village as well as its neighbours on the old "Roman Dere Street". Evidence of the Roman occupation is strong, such as stones from the original fort are incorporated into both local farm buildings and Lanchester's pretty Church of All Saints, dating back to Norman times. Lanchester is now a thriving and substantial village, with a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs. There is superb walking in the surrounding countryside - the Lanchester Valley Walk runs the course of an old unused railway line from Consett to Durham and is brilliant for cyclists and walkers. Just 8 miles away is Durham City and Newcastle is just 20 miles away. This is a perfect base for exploring Weardale and Teesdale, Cumbria and The Pennines, as well as the historic Roman Wall Country and the fabulous beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
