PEACE AND QUIET

We stayed here 20/06/09 - 27/06/09 and overall had a very relaxing and peaceful time....except for the first night when a storm with 70 mph winds blew in.
The property was easy to find and lives up to it's description , except that there was no DVD player, but , we were a little concerned about the ammount of large ants that were wandering all over the ground floor. But, since the property is surrounded on 3 sides by Pine tree's, the ants were not a surprise and after we sprayed all round the skirting boards with AntOff the ants got the message that they were not welcome.
The house is very spacious and comfortable. It was very pleasant to sit on the deck outside watching the amazing sunsets or watching cormorants diving for fish but the mosquito's are merciless so take plenty of repellent.
Cheticamp is a nice enough place but small. The supermarket is OK for everyday needs but the restaurants are mediorce at best. If you want to try acadien food then The Acadian is the place to go but be warned it closes at 6.30pm. Le gabriel is Ok with good seafood but Seafood Stop was very dissappointing. There is a very good store just as you go into town on the right which has selection of acadien music.
For days out Badeck is a nice place and the Alexander Bell museum is interesting if you like science related subjects....but perhaps not so good for young children.
One trip not to be missed is a drive into the Higlands National Park. Stunning scenery but you really need to leave the car to appreciate it. We would recommend the Skyline Trail which takes about 2 hours and is not too difficult. It goes out to a headland where we saw passing whales and saw a couple of Moose on the walk back.
A visit to the Gelnora distllery is interesting but the Whiskey produced is very expensive.
The sea is not accesable from the house as there is about a 50ft cliff which is unfenced so those with young children need to be aware but there is a very nice beach at Margeree's.
Cape Breton Island is very pretty and the Highlands National park is stunning but in truth there is not a lot to do and a week is perhaps too long. However if you seek some peace and quiet in a very comfortable and well designed house then we would recomend The Haven at Margeree's
