Located in the picturesque and tranquil hill top village of Plaigne, the old village bakery offers panoramic views over fields of sunflowers and rollling hills. Renovated in 2004 and 2007 yet retaining its true character including the original baker’s oven. In the heart of Cathar country the Old French Bakery is the perfect location to explore the medieval towns of Mirepoix and Carcassonne. Take a trip or cycle along the Canal du Midi and buy your lunch at many of the local markets nearby. Visit the local vineyards of the Malepere, Corbieres and Minervois Regions. Take a trip to the prehistoric caves near Foix and the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean - all are under an hour away. Close to both the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, Plaigne is just 40 minutes from Carcassonne (Ryanair) airport and 1 hour from Toulouse (Flybe, Easyjet, BA, BmiBaby) airport.

What to do?! A foodie and wine heaven, foie gras, cassoulet, confit de canard, local vineyards of the Malepere, Corbieres, Minvervois and Fitou are all within easy reach. This region has proved popular with top UK chefs... Stroll along the Canal du Midi and follow in the footsteps of Rick Stein, whose French Odessy took him along the Canal through Castelnaudary and Carcasssonne. If you watched French Leave with John Burton Race on Channel 4 then you will already have a feel for the area as it was filmed just 20 minutes from here. All the calories can be shed by the abundance of walking, riding and cycling available. The house has many walking books and maps. Swimming, sailing, windsurfing and fishing can be enjoyed on nearby lakes or at the Mediterranean. Why not visit the nearby historic and medieval towns of Castelnaudary, Foix, Fanjeaux and just under an hour away is Narbonne, Beziers, Pezenas and Toulouse.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Rental includes bed linen and bath towels. Maid service and linen changed once a week and a welcome gift is available on arrival. Children’s cot, bedding and high chair are available on request.

    We are pleased to offer 10% discount for couples outside of July and August.

    During the winter there is an additional charge for central heating. Rental is from Saturday to Saturday, arrival 16:00 hrs, departure 10:00 hrs to allow for cleaning.

    There is a deposit of 25% or min £100 is requested at time of booking with balance due 8 weeks prior to arrival. £100/€150 returnable deposit for damages/breakages is payable two weeks before arrival.

The Old French Bakery offers both character, charm and high quality with its terracotta tiled floors, beamed ceilings, original bakers oven, new kitchen, spacious bedrooms and luxurious bathroom. Large open plan sitting and dining room, terracotta tiled floor with the baker’s oven giving the room character and a cosy feel. Large comfy sofas French/ UK TV, (BBC/ITV) DVD player and extensive DVD library. Dining room table and chairs to seat eight. Leading to new fully fitted kitchen with breathtaking views across the rolling countryside. Huge terrace (35m2) which is private and enclosed with stunning views over the surrounding countryside, in addition there is a small terrraced garden. It is furnished with a table, parasol, chairs, BBQ and sun beds. First double bedroom, with king size bed, is spacious light and airy with two sets of French windows leading out onto south facing balcony with views over the village, church and surrounding countryside.

Second double bedroom with queen size bed has panoramic views across the ‘Tuscan’ hills. Access to the galleried bedroom is via an enclosed spiral staircase. It is a huge (4.5m x 5.5m) bright open room overlooking the landing, with velux roof light and window giving views over the church and rooftops of Plaigne. Three single beds with wardrobe, bedside tables and reading lights. The bathroom has been renovated and furnished to an extremely high standard. There is a seperate shower cubicle and semi-sunken bath. The panoramic views can even be enjoyed from your bathtub!

The Old Bakery has been exquisitely restored -- everything is beautifully finished -- and Plaigne is a lovely village from which to explore. In my opinion this region is one of the most beautiful in France -- fantastic food, spectacular scenery, very varied and (except for Carcassone) pretty tourist free.

This is the place where the French holiday, and there are lots of local festivals and events -- it's a farming community so much of the fetes and other activities are linked to the seasons.

I can't recommend this place highly enough -- a tiny rural hamlet, a perfect house, where you woken by the bells and the rustle of leaves against the buildings outside. Heaven.

Such a peaceful location. The property was clean and tidy on arrival. The views across the countryside are magnificent. Would recommend here to anyone.
