The small village of Migron, with its pretty, 11th-century stone church, is perfect for those who don't want to be too remote, with a boulangerie/patisserie and a butchers just a short stroll away, a mini-market, post office, and a weekly grocer's van selling fresh local vegetables. Oysters and mussels are sold next to the church every Saturday morning.
Migron is excellent for cycling, picnicking and exploring, and there are endless opportunities for days out. Chateaux, museums and ancient churches abound, the beautiful sandy beaches of Royan are under an hour away and the stunning island of Ile D'Oleron, even less. For children, there is a zoo at Royan, an excellent aquarium at La Rochelle, a water-slide park just 20 minutes' distance, and the Futuroscope theme park at Poitiers is also easily accessible.
Excellent markets are held one or more days a week in Saintes, Cognac, Matha, St Jean d'Angely among others.
Cognac and Pineau des Charentes - a local aperitif - are available to taste and buy direct from local producers, and local specialities include goats cheeses, oysters from the Marennes, mussels, and other wonderful seafood from the Atlantic coast. The best 'local' wine is Bordeaux - most grapes grown here are for Cognac or Pineau - and there are caves (wine co-operatives) in several local towns.
