'We both loved this idyllic cottage in a magic spot. Beaches in Johnshaven, Montrose, St Cyrus and Lunan Bay.

The beach in Johnshaven is a pebble beach with lots of interesting rock pools to explore with the bandy nets from the cottage. Lots of driftwood lands up on the beach in Johnshaven and it's good fun to find an interesting piece to take home as a souvenir of your holiday. We also collect many pieces of colourful seaglass which washes up on the shore.

Nearby St Cyrus has a superb sandy beach and is an ideal place for children and dogs to get rid of excess energy. You always seem to have the beach almost to yourself no matter what time of year you visit. Again lots of driftwood washed up,

Montrose beach is sandy and has the added attraction of the Splash paddling pool and play area for children.

Lunan Bay just a little further south of Montrose is another sandy beach which has been much enjoyed by our visitors.

Puffin Cottage

Review Submitted: September 14, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
I have stayed in Puffin Cottage twice and I will be booking it again on my next trip up north. It is like a home from home, clean, well-maintained and with everything you need to make your holiday go smoothly, including a dishwasher. The sea is only yards away and I never tired of looking at the view from the living room window, or of sitting on the bench at the front with my morning coffee watching the seabirds. Johnshaven is a lovely place to stay with a nice friendly pub which serves meals (we ate there three times), a well-stocked village shop (I didn't go to a supermarket all week and we could even get croissants there in the mornings ) and an arts and crafts shop which sells original jewellery and arty gifts. There are loads of interesting places to visit round about and lots of places to eat - I would recommend Hornblowers in Gourdon for fish and chips and Charleton Fruit Farm near Montrose for freshly made strawberry tarts. The owners are very friendly and helpful, and I hope to book for two weeks on my next visit.

Highly Recommend a visit to Johnshaven

Review Submitted: November 30, 2010 Date of Stay: November 2010
I live half an hour away from Johnshaven, but felt like I was a million miles away from city life in this lovely cottage. We love to take short breaks in Scotland, so have had many experiences, this was definitely one of my favourites. The cottage is delightfully homely, well equipped and the owners are a pleasure to deal with. However the view from the front of the cottage was the best surprise. We had children with us and they had great fun in the playground behind the cottage. Weather was seriously snowing down, but that just made the weekend and cottage better!!!! Highly recommend if you want a relaxing weekend in a commercially untouched Scottish fishing village.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your weekend in Puffin cottage. A few people have been surprised at how enjoyable a short break can be when it is practically on their doorstep. Bonus is, not so far to travel and therefore longer to enjoy yourself. Hope to see you again soon.

Dolphins made our holiday!

Review Submitted: September 17, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
We had a fabulous time in Johnshaven and Puffin cottage was superb. Plenty to do on the doorstep but a great base for the fantastic surrounding area. Steptoes yard is a must for collectors of absolutely anything, some wonderful art deco stuff. The beaches were lovely , especially the one at St. Cyrus, and not at all crowded. The shore outside the cottage was wonderful for rockpooling. The local pubs served great, fresh food. We had three generations on holiday and there was something for everyone to do with a cosy, well equipped cottage to return to at the end of the day. Lindsey and Chris have thought of everything to make the cottage a home from home and everyone in the village was very welcoming. The icing on the cake was that a pod of dolphins were in the sea outside the cottage from the day of our arrival till the day we left.

Puffin Cottage Family and Friends United

Review Submitted: May 11, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
Puffin Cottage was everything that was described on the web site. It was the perfect holiday cottage in a fantastic location with stunning sea views. The cottage was very well equipped down to every last detail to make you feel very much at home. It was spotlessly clean and very tastefully decorated, very spacious with an open fire which would make it very cosy in the winter months. Chris and Lyndsey were very welcoming and went through all the relevant details of the cottage itself as well as the surrounding areas of interest and the great array of books and leaflets of all the activities and amenities in Johnshaven and the surrounding area. Folders from other guests regarding restaurants and areas of interest that they had visited was very useful. What was a pleasure for us was being able to bring our pet dog Phoebe to such a beautiful cottage with a safe and secure enclosed back garden which was a great size and would be fantastic in the summer with family and friends having a BBQ.The beaches are beautiful and perfect for walking your dog, St Cyrus, Kinnaber and Lunan Bay were our favourites. We walked into neighbouring village Gurdon and enjoyed a very nice meal at the Hornblower restaurant. Local amenities were also very good the local shop had everything you needed and many a happy hour was spent in the local pub The Anchor chatting to the very friendly locals. The main reason for our holiday in Johnshaven was to catch up with family and friends but was made all the more special by being able to stay in such a beautiful and comfortable cottage with fantastic sea views in a great little fishing town.We would be very happy to recommend this cottage to our family and friends and will certainly be coming back ourselves in future years and would like to thank Chris and Lyndsey for being so very hospitable.,

Owner's Response: We are always pleased when the cottage can be used as a base for visiting friends and family in the area. We have had many guests who have come to Johnshaven for weddings, christenings and family re-unions.
We would like to thank Coastal Walkers and all our other guests who leave the cottage in such pristine condition, it is much appreciated.

Great short combined business/pleasure stay

Review Submitted: April 2, 2010 Date of Stay: March 2010
Short break in March 2010, two nights in Puffin cottage. Two adults and three dogs. Would have loved to stay longer! Very special thanks to Lindsey and Chris for the warmest of welcomes and the utmost ease of arrangements.

The cottage was immaculate in both location and condition! Everything was like new, tastefully decorated, superb kitchen - we ended up gourmet cooking, since it was just made for that. What is truly amazing about Puffin Cottage is the attention to detail, luxury if you will, that dog-owners rarely get to enjoy while travelling with their pets! In addition to excellent overall quality, there are clean, cozy and classy furniture and accessories (well, as good as new!), good collections of books, movies, music, and a lot of brochures about things to do in the vicinity, including walks with your dogs. The living room is a great place to sit by the fire and maybe watch a movie in the evening. Outside, a garden where the dogs could (and indeed did) play. It was well fenced, safe (double gates towards the street) and big enough even for large dogs to spend time in. Our dogs felt at home right away, since there was no extra distractions and the lawn was very inviting!

The weather was wintry but the garden would be great to spend time in during the warmer months. The location must be quiet even in the summer months, maybe some traffic from a nearby vacation trailer park but really, nothing to worry about. The street is a cul-de-sac so no through traffic at all. Parking right in front of the cottage, even our huge campervan fitted in nicely!

The tidal beach, while not sandy, sure is exciting. There is a coastal path that you can follow to other paths inland, or just walk along the shoreline for miles and miles. Great place to let your dogs run free, sea on one side and stone walls on the other - so no worries about your canine friends running off after a rabbit or other wildlife. Lots of birdlife to be observed, a picturesque fishing village practically on your doorstep, less than an hour to Aberdeen at any time of the day.

We and our dogs had a great time, will certainly come back some day!
