a place of beauty and quiet

Review Submitted: February 11, 2010 Date of Stay: January 2010
The property's location is exceptional, surrounded by natural mature pine trees with tracks radiating out in all directions for good walking and cycling. You are immediately aware of the beauty and the peace of the surrounding countryside in every season. You feel a sense of space and privacy that is quite restorative. The house is well-equipped and has an amazing range of books to read for less clement days in front of the log fire. The main room is comfortable with an expansive window to watch squirrels tree-hop. The small town of Kingussie is only three miles away and has all the basic services that might be needed for your holiday. I frequently revisit the Silverfiord Hotel in Kingussie for bar meals which never disappoint. But the house is in easy reach of all Speyside's tourist attractions, and is ideally situated for an active outdoor holiday. The owner is extremely helpful and facilitates that genuine get-away-from-it-all holiday.

Owner's Response: I am very lucky to have so many guests who demonstrate their love of the house and surroundings by coming again and again. It gives me such pleasure to know when I can't be there myself other people are able to enjoy it.

A delightful honeymoon spot

Review Submitted: January 5, 2012 Date of Stay: August 2011
My husband and I stayed at the Porch House for two weeks on our honeymoon in Scotland. We chose the location because it was secluded, in breathtaking surroundings and the accomodations appeared both tidy and affordable. We used Porch House as our home base for travelling around Scotland in our rental and visiting sites of natural beauty, culture, and history.

The place was beyond our expectations. The house was very large, and it was just two of us. The fireplace was a dream, the bird watching was a morning delight each and every day. (You need to pick up our own seed and suet- they are hungry little buggers :) ) It was ideal for us as we did a great deal of cooking when we were in the area at night, the kitchen ameneties were great.

The washer and dryer meant we didn't have to worry about packing too many things, and not have room for what we chose to buy upon our return home.

Working with Anne, the owner, was excellent. She is the home owner and is quite prompt in her replies and was very helpful to us. As far as business transaction went, she made her expectations and timelines very clear and was very helpful to us as renters.

As far as staying outside the major cities and trying to avoid tourist traps- this place, in my view, is as good as it gets. We have very fond memories of our hikes, the quiet stillness of the house in the morning when the birds are just moving about, curling up at night to the fire and music on the stereo, and of the lovely time we had in Scotland.

My husband and I will think fondly of it and are already plotting our return.

I recommend this place without reservation to people who like adventure and do not need the ridiculious hotel spa experience. If you are handicapped it is not super accessable but if the place inspires you that much, asking never hurt.
Owner's Response: Thanks for great review, many guests have chosen Porch House for their honeymoon as it allows peace and tranquillity after the pressure of the wedding.

The seclusion but with amenities nearby provide an excellent balance of get away from it all and reality.

All reviews have been favourable and it gives me much pleasure to think of couples starting their married life in my home.

Review Submitted: October 5, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We stayed a week at the Porch House. The house is absolutely beautiful and quiet location, comfortably furnished and equipped with everything necessary. Its central location in the Highlands, it is ideal as a starting point for excursions in all directions. The owner is very nice and helpful, always approachable and provide every possible support and not only in terms of accommodation! We will be here any time to spend our holidays. Many thanks to the owner !

Lovely house, wonderful location

Review Submitted: June 30, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
Myself, partner and two year old stayed in Porch house for a week. The house was extremely well equipped (right from digital radios to binoculars to the ice cream scoop!), clean, a good size for the number of bedrooms and very homely throughout. Lots of personal touches such as a huge library of books, lots of games, cuddly toys for the little ones and a birdfeeder outside every window. No internet for people who have unfortunately have to work like myself, but I'm sure most people would consider this an excellent excuse to escape from their work. What makes this is real gem, though, is the location - right in the middle of a pine forest with only one or two houses around it. Very peaceful and you feel like you have the forest to yourself. Lots of little walks around the house so you can nip out for an hour if you get lumbered with the Scottish showers. Because it's immediately next to several nature reserves, we regularly found ourselves visited by roe deer and red squirrels - our little one was delighted. Despite the remote(ish) location, it's only a short drive to Kingussie which should meet most of your needs and if not, Aviemore is only just a little further up the road. Lots of things to do - would recommend the Highland Wildlife Park, theFrank Bruce Sculpture trail, the Potting Shed tearoom, Pam's cafe and Silverford Pub/Restaurant. Excellent all round. Owner was also very helpful. Will definitely return again.
