The Portuguese call Tavira the 'prettiest town in the Algarve'. It is a medieval town built on either side of a river, which is spanned by a seven-arch Roman Bridge. Elegant 18th century houses border the Rio Gilao. Castle ruins overlook at least 30 churches. Tavira is renowned for its historical past. Recent excavations have discovered some important Phoenician and Moorish remains.
Faro airport is the nearest and can be reached by car in about 30 minutes.
