Photos and Description of this Saint-Omer area holiday chateau / country house
7 bedrooms in Chateau plus 3 in Farmhouse (located in grounds)

The delightful Chateau de Bambecq, once said to be 'the most beautiful small Chateau in Northern France', is set in fifteen acres of private park and woodland with its own small lake. It is situated in Racquinghem, a semi-rural location south-east of the historic cathedral town of Saint-Omer, less than an hour's drive from Calais, Boulogne and Dunkerque. It is available to hire by the day, weekend, week, or longer, by up to 14 people. Hen parties, Stag parties, Murder Mystery weekends, Golden Weddings, motor rallies, 'important' birthdays, romantic breaks, choral weekends, cycling tours, spiritual retreats and corporate exhibitions are just some of the events that have taken place here.

For those seeking a romantic spot in which to erect a marquee to stage an outdoor event - a summer wedding reception, for example - it is possible to hire just the grounds.

We also offer overnight (or longer) BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMMODATION from 75 euros per room per night, breakfast included.

Further details for this holiday chateau / country house rental in Saint-Omer area, France

The Chateau: The Chateau is the perfect large country house setting for those seeking comfortable, elegant and tranquil surroundings in which to relax, escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a more serene and leisurely pace of life. Tucked away within its own secluded grounds, it is nevertheless within easy reach of many different towns and their attendant facilities. The house lends itself particularly well to family reunions and celebrations, such as birthdays and anniversaries, offering a warm and homely atmosphere in a private venue. For the musically-minded there are two pianos and a guitar in the music room;

Although children are most welcome, the property, due to its age and size, is not ideally suited to large numbers between the ages of 18 months and 6 years.

We also offer overnight (or longer) BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMMODATION. Being situated close to the major ferry ports, we are ideally placed for the first or last night of your holiday in France.

The Grounds: Outside, the grounds consist of lawns, several acres of woodland and a lake. Some of the trees in the woodlands are well over 200 years old and more than 100 feet high. There are numerous pathways through the woods and a leisurely stroll round the property takes about 30 minutes. In summer the large aviary is filled with budgies and other varieties. On the lake are lots of ducks - ever grateful to be fed! For the more energetic, there is a rowing boat and 2-seater canoe on the small lake and a couple of adult-size bicycles on which to peddle off and explore the immediate surroundings. There is plenty of car parking space in front of the Chateau. There is also a large Weber barbecue, lots of garden furniture and endless different places to put it, depending on whether you are a sun-seeker or prefer some dappled shade.

There is also a manege - a horse-schooling ring - used occasionally by neighbours with horses.

Leisure Activities: There is much to see and do in and around the area, especially for those interested in the history of the Great Wars or the Battle of Agincourt. From March to September there are numerous 'brocantes' each weekend - like carboot sales, minus the muddy fields!

Saint-Omer is a delightful town with many shops, restaurants and places of interest to visit. Boat-hire is available at Clairmarais to explore the Audomarois, a network of small rural canals. Bikes can also be hired there. The local Aeroclub offers flights over the Audomarois. L'enVol, the excellent small restaurant, situated on the edge of the historic WW1 airfield, is a firm favourite. Paris is 2.5 hours by car, the Belgian border only 30 minutes away. The beaches of Wimereux and Cap Blanc Nez are 45 mins distant. Closer to home, Linda is a qualified Holistic Aromatherapist with a dedicated treatment room in the Chateau. Ask us about our Murder Mystery weekends - an opportunity to dress up and find out 'whodunnit'!

Golf:

The Saint-Omer Golf Club is situated in Lumbres, about 20 miles/30 minutes from the Chateau. It boasts two 9-hole courses and one 18-hole course and is open all year round. Green fees vary depending on the season. There is a Club House, restaurant, boutique and seminar room. The Saint-Omer Open, one of the most important tournaments on the European Professional circuit, is held there every year in June.

Low season (Jan/Feb/Mar/Nov/Dec) rates (in euros) per day are from 20-62, mid-season (Jul/Aug) 21-69 and high season (Apr/May/Jun/Sep/Oct) 21-86, depending on which course you play. You can hire both buggies (20-40 euros) and trolleys (pull-along 7 euros and electric 15 euros).

Other Activities:

microlight and hot air balloon flights

Weekend stay May 2011

Review Submitted: June 1, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
The hosts were charming. The location was quiet, secluded and most picturesque. I came on Friday 20th evening as part of a choir who performed a local concert on Sunday 22nd and the group used both the chateau and the farmhouse (q.v.) for accommodation and we held two pre-concert rehearsals in the chateau dining room, seated round the expansive dining table under the chandelier. There was also a comfortable drawing room with a piano for guests' relaxation, the use of the large kitchen and a dedicated refrigerator and storage space for all our needs. The chateau is tastefully and comfortably furnished in traditional style and those from our group who stayed in its bedrooms (I personally stayed in the farmhouse q.v.) said they had been warm and comfortable and well cared for. The breakfast was astonishingly good and impeccably served with home laid eggs, fresh milk from a local farm, cereals, fruit juice, a variety of intruiging jams, including sweet chestnut, and, of course, fresh warm croissants and freshly brewed coffee. The grounds are expansive and relaxing and we had an outdoor picnic-style lunch on tables on the lawn on Saturday and an indoor picnic in the dining room before the concert on Sunday afternoon. For dinner on Saturday night we had a pre-booked set dinner at L'enVol at the local aerodrome, a most delightful location. Not only was the service and food excellent, but the care that our hosts put into organising the meal, making sure any special deitary requirements etc. were met, was faultless. The chateau is an ideal location for a group break away, a workshop venue or a family holiday with either small children and/or teenagers as well as grandparents and aunts and uncles, too, as there is plenty of room.
