Plaka is one of the loveliest traditional villages in the Apokoronas area of Crete and is surrounded with village houses all growing olives, almonds, apples, lemons, oranges, as well as a wealth of colour in the hibiscus, bouganvillea and oleander. From springtime there is the pungent smell of the mountain herbs. Plaka has a supermarket, 3 traditional Cretan tavernas with wonderful food and a cafeneon.
Almerida - our local Blue Flag beach is literally a 5 minute drive away where there are watersports and a safe golden sandy beach. There is a supermarket, taxi rank, car and bike hire, moneychanging, internet cafe, postbox. Kokkino Chorio - 5 minute drive further up the mountain famous for the filming of the Anthony Quinn film 'Zorba the Greek' and if you sit in the cafeneon long enough a local will engage you in conversation about the part he had in it!! Kalives - the next beach is a lovely safe beach, with about 25 tavernas, 3 banks, hol-in-the-wall, internet cafe.
