Photos and Description of this Tywyn holiday cottage

This pretty stone cottage, built in the 1860's, is in the lovely village of Abergynolwyn, which was recently featured in the BBC TV program ' Weatherman Walking'. Abergynolwyn nestles in the beautiful Dysynni valley, and is surrounded by the spectacular Snowdonia National Park scenery. The cottage has a lounge with open fire, dining room, kitchen, restroom, two bedrooms, and a bathroom, and has a pretty garden and parking at the front and rear. The Railway Inn which serves excellent food, is only a two minute walk away, as is the village cafe /post office. It is perfectly situated for both valley and mountain walking - there is a river- side walk directly from the cottage, and Cader Idris is only a ten minute drive away. Dolgoch falls and the coast at Tywynn and Aberdovey are only a short drive away, offering great beaches and a range of water sports.

Lovely cottage with room for four

Review Submitted: July 9, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
Once we'd found the red door (how could I have missed it?), we fell in love with Idris Cottage. We spent a fortnight with friends who'd never been to Wales (all in our 60s). It was so quiet and the surroundings are so green. The cottage itself is beautifully appointed - it's clear the owners love it themselves - with everything from washing machine to colour TV (satellite and DVD). The beds are very good, one double in the master bedroom, one twin upstairs. Breakfast in the conservatory and, though the rooms are not big, there are plenty of them so you can withdraw if you feel like it. You will need 20p coins for the payphone (for some reason we were unable to make outgoing international calls on the phone, though it will receive calls) as there's no mobile reception nearby. You can do your shopping at the large Cooperative supermarket in Tywyn, the nearest seaside town, a 15 minutes' drive away (no shops in village), or a little further away at the Spar in Dolgellau. The village pub at the end of the road serves huge portions of good food. There's more good food to be had at the seaside towns of Aberdovey and Aberystwyth, but that involves a bit of driving.
The main attraction in the immediate vicinity is the countryside, with good walks from the back door (our favourite to the ruins of the Welsh castle of Castell-y-Bere and back), Cadair Idris is - just - within walking distance, and there's a lovely narrow gauge train service just outside the village which will take you as far as Tywyn, or just a couple of stops to nearby waterfall walks.
Further afield, Abergynolwyn is at the southern tip of Snowdonia with its hills and towns like Conwy (castle, walls, shops) to be explored.
Last but not least, the next door neighbours were always available to help if anything did go wrong - like returning the sheepdog that walked home with us and wouldn't go back.
Paul and Ingrid, thank you.

A lovely cottage amidst stunning scenery

Review Submitted: June 20, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
My husband and I spent a marvelous two weeks at Idris Cottage. Each day, I took long walks right from the door, while he painted landscapes. To our amazement, the scenery mixed pastures and rugged hills with valleys and chasms thick with subtropical plants, watered by spectacular waterfalls, springs, and pools. The cottage's small, but adequate, kitchen allowed us to cook with local ingredients, including the best eggs in the world from chickens living just across the back lane. We sometimes ate the results in the garden, amidst blooming shrubs and flowers. The bed was simply the best we've slept on in any rental cottage. And comfortable chairs and sofa provided inducements to read and reflect. We'd like to return for a longer stay, since my husband found more spectacular scenery than he could hope to capture in a mere two weeks.

One of the best holiday lets we have stayed in

Review Submitted: April 17, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
We really enjoyed our stay in Idris Cottage. It was well-equipped and comfortable as well as being surrounded by magnificent scenery. The Railway Inn and the cafe in the village were a popular choice for eating out - my husband was defeated by the slow roast lamb joint in the Railway Inn and they gave him a doggy bag. The cottage was very convenient for visiting a number of places - ranging from Aberystwyth further south to Caenarfon further north - seaside, mountains, railways and castles. There are also some wonderful walks nearby. This was our first stay in Wales and we would be more than happy to return.

Gorgeous cottege in an amazing location

Review Submitted: March 12, 2011 Date of Stay: February 2011
We had a fabulous stay in the cottage. It was well equipped and fitted with everything needed for a get-away-from-it-all break. Lighting your own log fire of an evening was a definite bonus!

The local pub was only 2 minutes walk away and with spectacular scenery on your doorstep this is definitely a location to be recommended. There is plenty to do whatever the weather.

Surrounded by beauty

Review Submitted: March 3, 2011 Date of Stay: February 2011
A great cosy cottage in a village nestling in a valley surrounded by beautiful hills. Good facilities, nicely decorated, with a fireplace and plenty of heaters, a washer dryer and dishwasher. Plenty of wonderful walks from the door of the cottage, and a friendly pub with hearty food and a roaring fire at the end of the road. Also very near the sea and the nice town of Aberdovey with its deep beach and multi coloured houses. Plenty for families to do if the weather is bad - a steam train and train museum, caverns etc. Perfect.
