The name GROSMONT derived from Grandimont Priory, built around 1200 by French Benedictine monks. Alum was later discovered and produced around Whitby. Between 1836 and early 1900s Grosmont was a prosperous ironstone mining community resulting in the opening of the Whitby-Pickering railway, George Stephenson's first line. The stream trains in 1847 brought the lime, sandstone, whinstone and brickmaking industries to Grosmont. Only traces are left of these important historic events.

Whitby is an historic fishing port with excellent resturants such as the Magpie Cafe which is Rick Stein's favourite sea food restaurant. The Royal Fisheries in Baxtergate is an award-winning fish & chip take away and cafe. Various popular events take place throughout the year such as Whitby Regatta, Whitby Folk Festival and in October there are special Hallowe'en events and the famous October War Weekend centred in Grosmont, Pickering and Whitby. 2 miles from Grosmont is the 'Heartbeat' village of Adensfield (Goathland). A train journey in the film 'Harry Potter' was made at Grosmont. The Grosmont steam trains have childrens' special events featuring 'Thomas the Tank Engine' characters and also special dining events including 'murder mystery' games on the steam trains. Various Steam Gala's April - October.

Great villa and stunning location

Review Submitted: November 1, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We were two familes of 3 with 2 dogs and we had a great holiday in Grossmont.
The house has lots of room and is superbly situated at the top of a hill a hundred yards from the village store/pub.
Views from the bedrooms, loo and terrace across the valley and beyond were fantastic and the extensive wooded grounds perfect for kids and dogs to explore.
We were lucky with the weather so did lots of walks - from the house it is a fairly easy walk to Goathland and the "old toll road" to Egton Bridge.
The one time it did rain was when we arrived at Egton Bridge - we took shelter in the Postgate Inn where we had a lovely long lunch, which we found to be good value and the owner/staff really friendly.
We had a day on the beach at Runswick Bay and visited Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes which is a nice old tradional village.
Most meals we were lucky enough to be able to have on the terrace at the villa enjoying some wine and the views.
We had decided to visit the area but were uncertain as to whether to stay in Whitby/Robin Hoods Bay or here - after visiting we were really glad we decided to stay at Grossmont.

wonderful home from home

Review Submitted: September 18, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
This was our second visit to Grosmont Villa and we found the house even more amazing than last year with the added extras of stunning new gates and front driveway, a new TV, railings round the terrace and an extra fawn added to the family of Red Deer in the garden.

The place is so comfortable, yet grand and equipped with everything you may ever need. The AGA cooking has now become second nature and we definately miss 'the loo with the view', the daily evening bat display and all the wildlife including herons, woodpeckers and bunnies in the garden.

A few new adventures this year were; fish and chips from 'the Magpie' in Whitby,( the chippy in Sleights is also brillaint - we found out last year,) we also enjoyed a good and reasonably priced meal from The Arnfield Arms in Gaisdale, hower the price of food at 'the Postgate' in Egton Bridge was so astounding that we walked back out again!!! it looks very nice but £19.95 for a beef stroganoff and all-but £25 for a beef wellington is enough to bring water to the eyes.

The local Station Tavern is full of friendly staff and locals and the food is very tasty pub grub, most places are dog friendly but we found it useful to call or email beforehand.

Our two dogs made full use of your 6 acres and really loved the space to run around and play, mind you; so did we.

Thanks again for allowing us to share your wonderful family home, we always feel sad to leave and I am sure we will be coming back again. I think a snuggly log fire and AGA warmed winter holiday would be superb

Another wonderful week in Grosmont Villa

Review Submitted: September 18, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
We've just returned from our second visit to this house and once again have enjoyed a wonderful week there.

The storms at the start of the week were a bit scary but at the same time enjoyable when viewed from the comfort and safety of the warm kitchen.

We enjoyed a walk through the woods towards Beck Hole but the bridleway back down the valley and across the railway towards the row of cottages at Esk Valley is closed. We ended up having to divert via sheep and cow filled fields and scrambling over fences to get back onto the old railway footpath. We found a very useful sign stating the bridleway was closed the following day as we approached the opposite end of said bridleway.

The walk to Goathland is lovely but there is a long incline at the far end and the pub stops serving food at 14.00 as we discovered.

We would recommend a trip to Whitby (including fish and chips from the Magpie). We also enjoyed the beach at Runswick Bay, just North of Whitby.

Meals out were good at the Station Tavern and the Arncliffe Arms, Glaisdale. The menu at the Postgate, Egton Bridge looks very nice but extremely expensive. No wonder they don't show the prices on the menu outside with for example Beef Wellington attracting a price of nearly £25.

The wildlife around the villa was amazing - bats, woodpeckers and we regularly saw 4 deer in the garden and approaching the house.

Thank you for another great week in this special place once again

Probably the best holiday we've ever had!!

Review Submitted: August 11, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We had an absolute ball and would like to thank you in letting us share what a wonderful property you have in such a wonderful area.
It's places like your's make you wonder why people bother going abroad. Honestly, we enjoyed this holiday a million times more than our very expensive two week all inclusive holiday in Mexico last year!

The house was perfect for all 8 of us, plus toddler, 4 cars and the 3 dogs loved the amount of land you had, they'd dissapear for ages!

We were always on the go.... Grosmont, the station tavern inn, the north york moors steam railway, Goathland (Aidensfield & Harry Potter), Pickering market, Pickering steam rally, Whitby (probably the best seaside resort in the UK, Fish & Chips were AMAZING) Whitby abbey, Robin Hoods bay.....

It was the wife's 30th birthday on the Monday (hence the break) and I managed to organise a delivery of balloons to the villa. The people at everyoccasionballoonsuk were very helpful and delivered exactly the time they said even though they were from Scarborough. The wife was elated.

In summary - location stunning (don't let the hills put you off!), facilities perfect, property clean and well maintained, fully recommended to all I know, we're planning on re-booking as we could have easily filled two weeks.

Fabulous week in Yorkshire

Review Submitted: November 2, 2010 Date of Stay: October 2010
We had a wonderful week in Grosmont in October 2010. The house was just perfect with lots of space. The kitchen was well equipped with a large dining table-perfect for board games on a wet day! So many things to do in the area-Whitby, Hutton-le hole, steam railway, lovely walks on your doorstep and great pubs nearby! We were there around Halloween so great sights in Whitby with the arrival of the many goths(as Bram Stoker's Dracula used Whitby as a backdrop in his book). The Abbey also had a special gothic event on which the kids loved-very eerie. So many things we didn't manage to do so we will have to return and would most definately return to this wonderful Victorian house.
