Libellule (Dragonfly) is a recently converted 2 bedroom barn in Liboulas, a quiet hamlet overlooking the Gironde estuary, near the historic village of Talmont sur Gironde and just 5 miles from the nearest beaches at Meschers. If you have young children, you'll find the 5 sheltered beaches at nearby Meschers ideal for your summer holiday. For older children, the long sandy beach at St Georges de Didonne (just fifteen minutes away) provides loads of waterports and activities. After a day at the beach, you can relax in the large garden - maybe even snooze in the hammock. There lots to do in within a 10 mile radius - Le Fa, an excavation of roman port,or the Parc de l'Estuaire, just beyond Meschers. You'll find high quality produce in the local markets & vineyards to tempt you to make good use of the well-equipped kitchen or the barbecue. If yohu'd rather eat out, the nearest restaurant is in the village of Arces just 1 mile away, and there are plenty more within a ten minute drive.

Liboulas is one mile from Talmont, one of 'France's Most Beautiful Villages', with its beautiful Compostella pilgrim church & hollyhock-lined streets. Talmont has several tourist & craft shops, as well as restaurants. On one evening a week in high season, you can soak up the atmosphere of the candle-lit streets to do some late shopping. Closer is Arces, with its boulangerie and well-regarded Franco/Irish restaurant Le Cottage. Local produce is used as far as possible for the modern irish & french dishes which attract the locals and tourists alike, and the music evenings are great fun. The Whitsun flower festival at Arces draws in the crowds, and the fireworks for Bastille Day out-do most British towns ten times the size. Meschers' little port is lined with fish restaurants - try one for Sunday lunch after shopping at the market. Or you can relax over brunch at Tina's Cafe at Meschers' Plage des Nonnes while your children play on the beach. Royan is just 20 minutes away.

  • Rental is Saturday to Saturday in school holiday periods, with a minimum stay of 2 weeks in July & August. Outside of season, flexible arrival/departure days may be possible so that you can take advantage of cheaper flights or ferry crossings - please enquire. We may be able to offer a discount of up to 15% on Brittany Ferries. We are able to accept payment in euros or sterling. There is a 25% deposit to be paid on booking, (non-refundable) and the remainder to be paid in full 8 weeks prior to arrival date.

Notes: Libellule has its own courtyard & parking. A doorway leads through to Libellule's own suntrap patio. There is a gas plancha (Spanish-style barbecue). The large garden, with views down to the Gironde Estuary, is occasionally used by the owners, but most of the time is for your exlusive use. For rare wet weather days, or in the evenings, there is also access to a barn with a full-size table tennis table for family tournaments. To help you reduce your packing, we provide bedlinen, towels and tea towels. All our bedlinen is 100% cotton or cotton/linen, with a change of bedlinen for each week of your stay. On arrival, you will also find some staple foods (milk,coffee, tea,sugar, bread, butter & wine) as well as cleaning materials, washing liquid & dishwasher tablets.

The light, airy open plan living/dining/kitchen has a double height ceiling over the living area and is comfortably furnished with sofa & 2 armchairs, TV, DVD/CD player, amplifier & speakers. The dining table seats 4. The kitchen is well equipped with oven, gas hob, espresso machine, washer/dryer, dishwasher, & fridge-freezer. French windows to the front and to the courtyard provide lots of light. The ground floor bathroom has both shower & bath, and a heated towel rail. Stairs lead to a gallery landing – a safety gate is available for young children. Bedroom 1 is a twin room with 2 very comfortable futon beds, canvas wardrobe & drawer units; & a velux window for stargazing. The main bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, bedside cupboards & antique pine chest of drawers & windows overlooking the garden and the courtyard, with a large ensuite shower room with heated towel rail. Libellule has under-floor heating throughout, except in the twin bedroom which has an electric radiator.

Good insulation & double glazing keep the cottage snug in the cooler months - there is also underfloor central heating. Libellule has its own private courtyard with carport. There is access to Libellule's suntrap patio with garden dining furniture and gas barbecue, and to the adjoining garden (shared with the owners’ house but only used by them on occasional visits). There's plenty of lawn space for your children to play, or for you to relax in the hammock or on the loungers, whilst taking in the view down to the Gironde. Our roses & shrubs scent the air, whilst our resident song birds serenade you. In season you can help yourselves to apricots, plums, figs, apples & pears straight from the tree & pick fresh herbs to flavour your cooking. The garden is bird-friendly , with birdbaths, feeders & nestboxes. We are applying for LPO (French equivalent of the RSPB) 'Garden Reserve' status. There is parking for one car in Libellule's courtyard & also in the owners' driveway.
