Location: Frigiliana in Spain
Voted the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority, Frigiliana which sits on a mountain ridge is just 7 kilometres from Nerja town centre and offers stunning views across the ‘campo’ all the way down to the Mediterranean.
Steeped in history, above Frigiliana, the hill El Fuerte was the backdrop of the final bloody defeat of the Moors of La Axarquía in their 1569 rebellion against the Spanish. High above the village are the ruins of the fort from which some of the Moors reputedly threw themselves rather than be killed or captured. It is said that bones and rusted weapons dating from this encounter still lie among the scrub on El Fuerte.
Frigiliana itself is the epitome of a Spanish whitewashed village. Beautiful little village houses set in a maze of cobbled streets, their balconies abundant with flowerpots and overflowing with colour. Strolling through the village, there are plenty of little corners to sit in the shade, rest and reflect on the day.
