Very Special and Comfortable. Rural location in The Howgills

Between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Green Barn Cottages are located in the Howgill Fells, on the outskirts of the lovely village of Ravenstonedale.

We're not a management agency but onsite owners who care, with three very special self-catering cottages in a conversion of our gorgeous stone barn, all Visit Britain 4 Star Rated, each with a Gold Award, and to a standard that we'd want to find for ourselves.

Surrounded by farmland and fells, the location is ideal for walking or touring, cycling, sightseeing or simply relaxing in beautiful and peaceful surroundings and perhaps spotting one of our Red Squirrels. Our entrance leads straight out onto the fell, where you can have a gentle stroll along the side of Artlegarth Beck, or the start of a more serious day’s walking. Well trained dogs are welcome. The Byre and The Haystore are available for weekend and midweek breaks all year, as well as full weeks, and can be linked to sleep 8 guests.

Individually controllable underfloor central heating throughout. Large comfortable and characterful lounge and dining area with stone fireplace and woodburning stove. Luxury ensuite bathrooms with whirlpool bath and mains pressure shower over. Wireless Internet access. And more! We always enjoy the first reaction from our guests when we show them around The Haystore! The cottage is on two levels, plus a gallery, with underfloor heating throughout provided by our ground source heat pumps. The heating is controllable in all rooms, and is included in the price. The Haystore is built “upside down”, with the bedrooms on the ground floor and living area above. It has its own entrance through one of the original stable doors of the barn into a porch and “muddy boot” area. Your utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer.

As well as being a haven for walkers (see Wainwright's 'Walks on the Howgill Fells') and cyclists, we are set in stunning scenery just a mile from the attractive village of Ravenstonedale, which has a small shop, pubs serving good food, a tennis court and a golf course. You can enjoy trout fishing nearby, either on still water at Bessy Beck Fishery, or on the River Eden for which day tickets are readily available. Pony trekking and mountain bike hire are available nearby. The market town of Kirkby Stephen is only six miles away, and you can travel on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway from the station at Kirkby Stephen.

Kendal, Penrith and Sedbergh are all within easy reach, as are The Lakes and The Dales. There’s an abundance of bird life, and you may well spot buzzards and curlews along with the more common species. Red Squirrels, virtually non-existent in most parts of the country, are regular visitors to our grounds.

    Reduced rate for one couple occupancy.

    For a large group of 8 or 9 we can connect the upstairs living areas of The Haystore and the next door cottage The Byre which is very similar and also has a 4 star rating. They are normally separated by twin solid firedoors and soundproofing.

    By renting all three of our cottages, The Byre, The Haystore and The Carthouse, a group of up to 15 can be accommodated in splendid comfort.
  • Terms are 25% with booking, balance due 8 weeks before letting period starts.
