Photos and Description of this Essex holiday house Three bedroom house right across the creek from a beautiful beach.

The Beach House is situated on the Essex Sunshine Coast next to a Nature Reserve right on the bank of a tidal creek with stunning views of the sea in front and the river behind. The huge, usually empty, beach is just over the creek so you can wade over (bring wellies!) at low tide or walk down to the end of Beach Road to the nature reserve and through to the beach. Or you can stroll through the reserve, along the beach and back along the sea wall or stop and bird-watch from the hides or the sun deck. A booklet is in the house along with binoculars and bird books if you don’t know a plover from a pigeon. We have a list of birds spotted (34 in one weekend including Marsh harrier, linnets, Reed buntings, oystercatchers and kestrel) and can email it to you if you ask. Jaywick is about 20 minutes walk along the sea wall (about 30 minutes along the beach) where you will find pubs, shops and amusements.

We think the main attraction is the walking, beach-combing, bird-watching or simply enjoying the peace and quiet. It's a pleasant 30 minute stroll along the grassed sea wall or beach to Jaywick (with its famous sands) and the same again to the typically English seaside resort of Clacton-on-Sea, or you can drive in about twenty minutes. St Osyth is a charming village with unpretentious local pubs and restaurants or you can go further afield to Beth Chatto Gardens or the ancient city of Colchester with all its sights and facilities. Nearer you have the traditional seaside resort of Clacton with its pier, shops, restaurants and amusements. Bird-watching is excellent. We know nothing yet about our feathered friends but regularly see quail, partridges (who scamper up to the house) and pheasants as well as a beautiful barn owl who comes out during the late afternoon sometimes.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Essex, United Kingdom

The Beach House is in the tiny hamlet of Lee-Over-Sands which is about three miles from St Osyth and about five miles from Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. There are three bedrooms (two doubles with washbasins and one with single size bunk beds), a large living room with integral kitchen and an upper sun room and deck with wrap-around views of the sea and river. The house is clean and comfortable in a hardy way and the Seventies-style shower won’t be winning any design awards but is actually very efficient. There's parking for two or three cars along the side of the house and a slipway into the creek for the nautically-minded. The real joy is the sheer tranquility, waking up in the morning to flocks of geese and sitting in the sun room or on the deck gaping at the views over the creek, sea, river and marsh. At night sit in the nautically-themed sun room and watch the ships’ twinkling lights or gaze at the spectacular night sky including the occasional shooting star.

Although there is a neighbouring house used as a day retreat, the chances are that you will be on your own with just the birds and the vast sky for company. We are very flexible (except on the check-in and out times!), depending on prior bookings, extremely friendly and we genuinely want others to share this unique spot so just ask. Most things are possible!

A fantastic find!

The unusual over-the-sea-wall location, peaceful surroundings with few neighbours and long, empty beach make the Beach House a perfect seaside escape.

The house itself was delightful and comfortably furnished in a fuss-free way with a few nautical touches. The kitchen was well-stocked with all the equipment we needed (we didn't bother to eat out) and, for later in the evening, there were plenty of games and DVDs, plus wildlife books and binoculars.

Even in the early days of autumn the sun room was a cosy spot to read or simply relax and enjoy the panoramic views by day and stars at night. A late breakfast was served up on the sunny balcony (the window shutters made it easy to enjoy a long lie-in in the comfy beds).

Ottilie helpfully provided plenty of pre-visit information, including details about extra-high spring tide when we visited, with the water inching towards the back steps at midnight. We're looking forward to using the the dinghy when we return in warmer weather but wading across the creek at low tide wasn't a problem, if a little muddy, and added a touch of adventure to our sunset stroll. We went on other good walks nearby, but enjoyed 'our' beach most of all.

Highly recommended for a tranquil, back-to-nature retreat, just a couple of hours away from London.

The Perfect Escape

This Unique Retreat is a real find. Truly far from the madding crowd
it has panoramic and breathtaking views of the countryside and ocean. With a very friendly owner who does everything to ensure
a great holiday or short break experience we had no hesitation
in visiting twice in 2009 and will no doubt be back in 2010.

Its hard to believe that in the same time it can take to cross
London you can be relaxing in this tranquil paradise.

Can't wait to come back!!

What a hidden gem! Far far better than we could have hoped for. Ottilie was anxious at having catered for visiting families..she needn't have worried...she'd done a great job..everything was perfect! From perfect directions, tidal times thru to the kids bed linen, she hadn't missed a trick! The peace and tranquility were unbelievably good to have in such a busy world. 2 adults and 2 children all agreed it's the best holiday we've had..bar none! Even the dog loved it..miles of deserted PRIVATE beach to ourselves while the papers showed Weymouth beach was jam-packed. Ottilie couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. From personal emails and phone calls thru to endless flexibility working around our family work commitments.
Thank you, Ottilie, for providing such a wonderful retreat. We've been singing your praises since coming home and would happily recommend it to anyone.
We can't wait to come back! Thank you Ottilie!!!

Out of this world!!

We weren't quite sure what to expect when the (absolutely lovely) owner told us the house was down an unmade road and over the sea wall (and therefore in the sea officially!) but we adored the charming house and the location was like nothing we'd seen before. The views are spectacular - you can see the sea for miles especially when the tide is high and it comes up into the garden!! We wanted a retreat for a few days and this was perfect.

There's a lot to do and see locally but we spent most of the time in the house - either on the top sun deck or in the gorgeous sun room. In the evenings the sun room held the warmth of the day and we sat on the Lloyd Loom chairs sipping a glass of good wine watching the spectacular sunsets.

I can't recommend the Beach House enough. The owner is loveliness itself, so welcoming and helpful. I can't wait to return over the sea wall and we've taken up bird watching in anticipation because we saw so many unusual birds we couldn't identify. A total tranquil treat!
