Cross over on the ferry from Sandbanks to Studland and you are on the Isle of Purbeck, 15 minutes from Swanage and in a National Trust area of outstanding natural beauty. Swanage is at the end of the Purbeck Peninsula and at the start of the Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site. The area is renowned for its walks.
Swanage is a traditional seaside town with safe swimming from the blue flag beach, perfect for children, there is a Punch and Judy show during the summer. Carnival Week is at the end of July.
Music festivals take place throughout the year - blues, jazz, folk. Swanage takes part in the annual Purbeck Film Festival and there are year round events at The Molem Centre. Take a boat trip round the coast, go fishing or try diving.
Swanage steam Railway goes to Corfe Castle, now run by The National Trust, goes back to the English Civil War. Visit Brownsea Island where scouting began and you can still see red squirrels.
