Photos and Description of this Thanet holiday house
Stunning 3 bed 'deco' house in peaceful Palm Bay - short stroll to sandy beach.

With sea glimpses from the first floor, this splendid 1937 house is resplendent in its position in the prestigious, peaceful Palm Bay area of Cliftonville between Margate and Broadstairs on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. The famous sandy Blue Flag beaches are within a few minutes walk and the seaside resort of Margate and the enchanting town of Broadstairs both about half an hour stroll or ten minutes drive. If you are looking for an all-mod-cons type of stay then the Pink House is not for you but if you would feel at home in a truly original 1930s house, with retro crockery and original features, then you will love it!

We're about 90 mins from London, either by road or new high-speed train from St Pancras. We can arrange a cab to collect you from the station or you can easily get the bus. We are only 7 miles from Ramsgate Ferry (Ostende) and 20 miles from Dover (Calais) and we have welcomed French, Belgian, Dutch and German guests for weekends and holidays. Please see our reviews!

There is so much to see and do that I literally don't have room to list it all here! There is simply something for everyone. Please see Further Details or contact me for links and information. Even if Thanet only had its beautiful bays and beaches it would be enough but there's so much more. Whether you want a traditional family holiday for all ages, a romantic break for two, a walking (or cycling) weekend or an arty or architecture adventure it's all here waiting for you to discover it.

You can stick to Margate Main Sands for a 'Kiss Me Quick' donkey rides and candy floss style break or escape along the coast to the almost-deserted beaches. There's clubs, bars and a casino or simply peace and quiet with fresh sea air and resident parakeets in Palm Bay. Explore the Viking Trail or have fish'n'chips from the paper on the

majestic harbour. Take tea, go retro shopping or gallery-going in the Old Town or simply relax. And you'll never forget the gorgeous Turner-inspiring sunsets.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Arrival time is after 4pm and departure by 10.30am. Generally the key won't be available until 4pm on arrival day in high season. We have to be strict on this for the sake of our lovely housekeeper. However, in low season and by prior arrangement only, we are always flexible about times. If no-one is leaving the day that you arrive you are welcome to arrive earlier; if no-one is arriving the day that you leave you are welcome to leave later but strictly by prior arrangement only.

Our rates include taxes, gas, water, electricity, and end-of-stay cleaning. Linens (bed linen, huge fluffy towels and tea towels) are provided at a cost of £20 per room. We regret that we have to charge this on top but we have to pay for a laundering service.
  • The rentals stated cover up to four people. For each additional person there is a charge of £20 for up to three nights, £50 for up to a week, £75 for up to a fortnight. We have found this to be the fairest pricing model otherwise a couple staying would have to pay the same amount as a family of six. We take a non- refundable deposit of £200 to reserve the booking and when the payment is made for the holiday this then converts to a security deposit to cover any breakage or excessive cleaning costs. We expect a normal amount of clearing-up to be done but anything above the norm will be charged at cost and deducted from the deposit.

We prefer the initial deposit via PayPal but we can also accept a bank transfer or cheque. The payment for the stay is to be paid before 14 days of the start of the booking unless we have made other arrangements.
  • In the case of cancellation we regret that we cannot return the original £200 payment but we will do our utmost to rebook your stay and return as much of any other payment that we can.

There is a separate loo upstairs and a cloakroom downstairs - this was rare pre-war and demonstrates the quality of the house. However, in 1937 it was not deemed necessary to have a washbasin in the room and this will also be rectified in a sympathetic manner eventually.

The matching Savoy headboard and bedside tables complete the room and this is a lovely sunny space especially in the mornings. There is a small 1930s wardrobe in this room. The third bedroom has a Relyon - top quality - storabed so can either be a single (3') or twin room but it is small so most suitable for children when both beds are out. Notes: We are constantly upgrading the house with sympathetic furniture and eventually it will boast a parquet floor and a new kitchen with washing machine and dishwasher to blend with the original fittings. At the moment we have a worktop dishwasher. There is a selection of garden furniture. A hardwood table and chairs for al fresco dining in the sunny back garden as well as sun loungers and various Lloyd Loom chairs and cushions. These are to be found in the garage if they are not out on the patio when you arrive. Eventually we plan to provide bicycles for our guests to use (when the parquet floor makes it out of the garage and into the house!). If you are particularly interested in having bikes to use please let us know. This applies to anything you want to know about the house or the locality. We absolutely adore the house and the area and are always happy when guests appreciate them too.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Thanet, United Kingdom

The Pink House: The Pink House is a fabulous example of 1930s architecture; often thought of as 'deco' but actually 'modern', which confuses people who are expecting a brick box! It has a lovely large light living/dining room with three walls of windows including French doors onto the sunny terrace and a jaw-dropping huge circular window, a generous hall with study area, kitchen and downstairs cloakroom. Upstairs are three bedrooms and a bathroom and separate loo. The front bedroom has a wall of windows offering sea glimpses and a door to the wrap-around balcony. It has a very comfortable king-size bed sourced from the Savoy hotel and original built-in wardrobes and bedside tables.

The garden bedroom faces south and west and is also very light with sea glimpses from the west windows. This room also boasts a bed from the Savoy and matching bedside tables. The third bedroom is bijou but pretty and can be a single or twin room.

Palm Bay: The house is the finest surviving example of the Palm Bay estate, an 1930s architect-designed estate with strict planning rules to ensure the highest quality build. Virtually all the other houses have been re-roofed or extended although you can still see two nice examples from the back bedroom.

Palm Bay is a very genteel residential area of Cliftonville, which has a parade of useful shops including Batchelors, a wonderful old-fashioned tea shop and top-rate patisserie, and other small independent shops along with banks, cafés and a Tesco Metro. The beach is just around the corner with a permanent seawater swimming pool a little way along and the Palm Bay café for home-cooked treats. There's water sports available and miles of beach in both directions. Joss Bay is a pleasant walk away and is a surfers' paradise and other beautiful bays include Botany and Walpole Bay. Thanet has a record ten Blue Flag beaches (that's an eighth of the country's total!) so you can be assured that they are safe as well as stunning.

'Planet Thanet': Thanet used to be an island and still retains that feeling of being slightly different....Margate was the first ever English seaside resort and retains the traditional activities - donkey rides, deckchairs, paddling, 99s - it's all still here! There's also the fascinating Shell Grotto, the amazing Mad Hatter's Tea Shop in the quaint Old Town and the eccentric Walpole Bay Hotel with its delicious old-fashioned Sunday lunches, with piano accompaniment. Tracy Emin's new neon sculpture on the restored Harbour is testament to the energetic arts scene, soon to be cemented by the new Turner Contemporary gallery. Margate has over 400 listed buildings! including the deco gem Dreamland, the Theatre Royal, the Tudor House and the Carlton Cinema in Westgate. With its Dickens heritage, Broadstairs is totally charming with quaint shops, restaurants and original ice cream parlours. Ramsgate is only a few minutes drive further and its Royal Harbour offers boat trips and cafe culture.

Beautiful Art Deco Heaven!

Review Submitted: January 10, 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
Me and a group of friends stayed here over new year and had a wonderful time! If you're a vintage fan this place will tickle your fancy! So many period details, beautiful vintage kitchen (with the cutest dishwasher I've ever seen!) lovely windows and stunning little details all over the place. The house is cosy and bright. 10 mins walk from the beach and 20 mins to the vintage shops in the old town. We had a great stay and will aim to return one day! Thanks Pink Palace.

Great family fun

Review Submitted: June 6, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
We had a perfect week for our summer half term break.

The house is child friendly, stylish and easy. It is close to the beach with it's lovely cafes, and only a 10 min walk into Margate.

The road is quiet and friendly and it is a perfect base from which to explore the Kent coast. Broadstairs was a revelation - especially Morelli's gelateria.

In the pink

Review Submitted: September 21, 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
Quirky Englishness at it's very best: lovely hosting, perfect weather, hey-day architecture and a clean, well provided for home, meant we all left the seaside in the pink! The Turner Gallery, opening April 2011 will demand another visit in the Spring. Thanks!

Fab Pink Palace

Review Submitted: September 3, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
We stayed at The Pink Palace (Pink House) for five nights and had a fantastic time. The process of booking was great and Ottilie was very helpful prior and during our stay, her neighbours were very kind to us.

The outside is stunning with a pretty garden, perfect for having lunch or dinner.

We were thrilled with the house, from the kitchen to the decor.

Especially the lovely touches such as the tea set and biscuits that were there on our arrival, ice lollies in the freezer and cookies and milk in the fridge - a true home from home stay.

Lots of games and information about the local area.

Palm Bay and Margate are within walking distance, we loved the shops in Northdown Road.

We are looking forward to our next visit in Spring.

Many Thanks for a lovely holiday

Fabulous pink house!

Review Submitted: August 23, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
I have to be honest, my expectations were high before getting to this property - the pictures looked good, I already knew it was a nice part of the world and the weather was usually kind, and the owner had nothing but helpful! But nothing could have prepared me for just how gorgeous this house is! But not just gorgeous, truly comfortable aswell - often you get one or the other, but this house had it all. All of my family loved it, from my 75 year old mother to my 5 year old son, they all found something charming about it. Everyday we found somewhere different and interesting to travel to, and never had to be in the car (or on foot) for more than 40 minutes - we did Dover, Ramsgate, Sandwich, Broadstairs (can still taste the ice cream!) and of course Margate and Cliftonville and all of us were thoroughly entertained from morning to night. A fabulously enjoyable holiday and a return visit to not only this area, but also to this house, is definitely on the cards!
