In the fourteenth century, internal struggles between the various lordships of the place, marked a period of political distortion until 1369 when it was given a republican system that lasted for more than four centuries. In XVIII century the city was occupied by the French and given to Napoleon's sister, Elisa Baciocchi and thereafter came under the Bourbons and later under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany at the end of 1800.
Lucca is one of the few towns which has maintained intact its superb 16 C entury City Walls which protectingly encircle it, a charming place to stroll among the trees and grassy banksancient town walls intact. Lucca is situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain near the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's famous for its walls all around the ancient town: they are still fully intact today; each of the four principal sides is lined with a different tree species.
Lucca is even the birthplace of composers Francesco Geminiani, Gioseffo Guami, Luigi Boccherini, Giacomo Puccini and Alfredo Catalani.
