4 Fabulous houses with extraordinary views in the heart of the Dordogne

In the heart of the area known as the Golden triangle, La Prairie is ideally situated squarely in the middle of one of the most exquisite regions of France. 1001 castles adorn the countryside alongside world renowned prehistoric sites Hilltop villages are to be found around every corner and the 11th century village of Domme is within cycling distance. La Roque Gageac and its beautiful medieval chapel sit on the banks of the river Dordogne as though time has stood still. Here at La Prairie we offer you 3 beautiful cottages and a fabulous farmhouse from which to choose, all sharing an extraordinary swimming pool. This stunning tiled pool of original design has a natural sloping beach and steps. It is also floodlit from within and even has its own water flow system that makes the water choppy. There are plenty of wooden sun-loungers, all spaced for privacy, and new this year is a beautifully constructed oak shelter with wooden decking that extends to the pool side.

Details for The Farmhouse in Perigord Noir, Dordogne, France

The Farmhouse which dominates La Prairie was newly built in 1999 using the same materials as would have been used all those years ago when the original Farmhouse stood strong and proud during the 2nd world war, harboring the French Resistance. The decision to rebuild on exactly the same spot was quickly made and the result is amazing. Not only is the interior and the exterior worthy of a lengthy holiday but the wonderful feelings in this house make it truly special. We have used old materials where possible and all the exposed wood including the roof trusses are in solid oak. The kitchen is handmade as is the gorgeous staircase leading to those 4 beautiful bedrooms which will easily sleep all 8 of you in great comfort. Handmade tiles adorn the floors of the hall and the kitchen and oak boards take care of the rest of the house. A fabulous front porch welcomes you into the Farmhouse, the ideal place in which to relax or watch the swallows play.

Just a short distance by car which takes you through the Valley Du Ceou, up the hill and around the corner and here you are at La Prairie. The lovely little village of Daglan lies snuggled in the valley below and boasts one of the loveliest restaurants in the Dordogne (certainly the best place to eat outside). Le Peyruzel which lies opposite La Prairie has a hill top 11th century castle and is clearly visible from all of our 4 houses. Nearby lies the jewel in the crown of this extraordinary region: La Roque Gageac, a tiny village that lies precariously close to the Dordogne river and is so exquisite and romantic that it deserves to be seen at dawn when it lies peaceful and quiet and lost in a time warp. There is a strong expectation of seeing a damsel or a knight emerge from one of the ancient houses. And what about those magical, fairy tale castles? How many will we be able to see whilst we are here. Three or maybe we could squeeze in 10 of them?.

This bathroom, albeit it small is much loved by our guests for its cosiness and the positive feeling that the house emanates is quite intense in this room for reasons unbeknown to us! There is a full length bath with an overhead shower, a toilet and a sink. Once again, lovely uninterrupted views across the gardens.

The large double bedroom is perhaps the most glorious of places to be because of its truly amazing views across the village of Le Peyruzel towards the Chateau. An extra wide bed with beautiful bedding, large wardrobes and enough room to stretch out makes this room very special. Next to this room is the family room with bunk beds and a single bed which is also lovely, decorated in yellow with a family collection of stamps framed on every wall, this room is always a favorite with the children and adults alike! Further down the corridor is the 'pink' double bedroom with matching powder pink bedding and lovely views across the countryside. Next to this room is the single 'blue' room which also has lovely views across the gardens.

Notes:

One of the loveliest features of The Farmhouse is the terrace off from the hall and the kitchen. An amazing outside 'room' that is the favorite of all our clients who find it difficult to envisage eating anywhere else but here. An added touch is the wrought ironwork that holds up the wisteria that hangs overhead. Although, much to our shame, the house is unsuitable for wheel chairs, it is, we find, suitable for the elderly and infirm. Wide deep stairs make the access to the bedrooms above easy and pleasurable. If, after arriving, you find that there is something missing for our less able guests then please inform me immediately and all will be done to make the holiday a success. Because of the vast amount of space surrounding La Prairie we have decided to allow your pets onto the premises. We had a Labrador ourselves not too long ago and understand the desire to bring along your canine friends!

Those little extras.....

Having taken holidays in the past with a well known British company that provides luxurious accommodation throughout the British Isles, we have learnt much from our time with them and have applied their diligent strategies to our own homes here in the Dordogne. We have taken it upon ourselves to provide everything that could be wished for in a self catering accommodation. Those little things that we take for granted at home but rarely find provided when we leave to holiday abroad are always provided here at La Prairie. After all it would be nice to arrive to a home that is welcoming. Where there is a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge and orange juice for the children or for breakfast. Some strawberry biscuits would be nice and also a cold bottle of spring water. It would be even nicer to find that there is toilet paper, a bag in the dustbin, kitchen roll in dishwasher tablets and some washing machine powder for that first inevitable wash that will need doing.

More little extras....

During an early spring one year we rented a house in the Pyrenees and after a long tiring journey we arrived to find that the fire had not been lit and the house was cold. The beds were unmade and there were no towels. The fridge was empty and there was not even pepper and salt. Arriving at La Prairie is the antithesis of this unfortunate situation that befell us many years ago. Arrive during the cooler months and the wood burners(or radiators for MadoHargreaves)will be burning brightly. The beds will be freshly made and the bathroom sparkling clean with towels laid out ready for use and soft bath mats. There will undoubtedly be a fresh table cloth waiting for you to lay the oak table for supper. Candles will be ready to be lit. But best of all is the knowledge that if I have somehow overlooked the essential item to make your holiday complete, then let me know and I, within limits, will provide what is missing.

For our younger guests....

Having had a brood of children ourselves, we understand the need to provide everything possible to make your holiday as un-stressful as possible. The very though of flying to Bergerac or driving down with push chairs, potties, changing mats, cots, bedding, baby listening devices, toys, books, plastic dishes, high chairs, stair gates, a baby relax chair and goodness knows what else, is ridiculous. So we provide it. All of it. And once again if anything is missing, let me know.

Other Activities Hot air ballooning, paintball, quad bike riding

Golf Information:

La Prairie is very fortunately situated within a few miles of one of the most beautiful golf courses in the South West of France. That it happens to be next to the river Dordogne and home to a well known gastronomic restaurant is a wonderful piece of luck! After all, when those 18 holes are done and dusted who would dream of objecting to a cold beer on the terrace of Rochebois or perhaps a candle lit dinner?
