Miles of Golden Sandy Beaches. Walk to Restaurants:
Isla Cristina is famous within Spain for its stunning, clean and safe golden sandy beaches. You can walk along them for miles marvelling at birds, the beautiful shells and the little water pools sometimes left by the outgoing tide. At low tide you can still fish for mussels with your feet in the sand under the lowest water. These are called coquinas or almejas and are delicious cooked with white wine and garlic. There are wooden restaurants 'chiringuitos' on the beach, by the dunes. Buy ice-cream, taste the well-prepared Spanish coffees or have leisurely seafood lunches overlooking the beautiful beach where children can run undisturbed. In the morning the sea water tends to be calm and great for distance swimming. In the afternoons the sea is wavy and fun for body-surfing. Catamarans, small sailing boats and wind-surfers can be hired from sailing schools along the beach.
Step out of the apartment and find the freshest seafood restaurants and tapas bars.
Sail, Windsurf, Kitesurf, Bird Watch, Waterparks:
Watersport enthusiasts love being in Isla Cristina. There are marinas at Isla Canela & Isla Cristina where sailors can leave their yachts or hire sailing and motor boats to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline or the navegable salt-water Guadiana River. Or you can just relax on the beach and enjoy the skillful gymnastics of the kite surfers and windsurfers. For younger family members at Cartaya (approx 30 mins) you will find Kartodromo de Cartaya (Karting) open year round, and popular Aquopolis water park which opens normally mid June until first week in September. 45 mins over the border into Portugal, near to Faro, you will find the Aqualand water park, the essential day out according to some of our guests from past years.
The area is a wildlife haven, from the Marismas at Isla Canela with flamingo and other wildfowl, to the National Park at Donana (45 mins drive), one of the most important nature reserves in Europe.
