Romantic tiny hideaway

JosieLodge Deal, Kent, UK.
Review Submitted: November 17, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
From the directions we were given, the cottage was easy to find. We had stayed in Rouen for two nights before and wanted an escape to the countryside, which this definatly is.

What the pictures don't show is that immediately in front of the house is a couple of paddocks with horses, which I quite liked. The owners of the property live next door and are friendly, without being too close for comfort. You can knock on their door to ask about anything.

The cottage is well equiped for two to stay and modern enough with it's facilities without losing the old character of the building. You must be mobile enough enough for the wooden stairs and to walk across to the car parking on gravel at the side of the cottage.

Although we stayed at the very end of August into September, we had thunder storms and drizzle for most of the time (unusual for the time of year!), but the cottage was so cosy (as the name suggests) and the wood burning stove kept us warm. It was easy to travel to all the Normandy tourist attractions from, we even went to see the Bayeau tapistry and Mont St Michel on the same day! (Not recommended as a bit rushed, but possible.) To help in finding tourist spots, there is a pile of tourist leaflets in the cottage to flick through.

The nearest shops and supermarkets are in very non-tourist towns, which were great, with the nearest town being Vire about 5 miles away.

The countryside around the cottage is gorgeous and I recommend that anyone who stays should try driving around all the small country lanes around the property (Satnav is a reassurance to find your way back). We came across some gorgeous picture perfect small valleys, old glorious houses and lots and lots of cows!

I would reccomend this property to any couple wanting to get an experience of really rural normandy. Definately a romantic hideaway.

A perfect end to our holiday

A couple of Kiwis New Zealand
Review Submitted: October 26, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
My wife and I arrived at this wonderful cottage at the end of a 3month holiday driving around europe. On arrival we found the property to be very well apointed with everything we would need to relax. The hosts where very friendly and accmodating answering any questions about surrounding area and where to go for food etc. The property is well positioned for going to the normandy beaches but also the surrounding area had so much to offer in the way of small villages to visit if the beaches are not your thing. All in all we had a wonderful time and we not hesitate in reconmending this property to any travellers.

Rustic charm with modern reliability

Peter-the-Scribe Norwich, England
Review Submitted: October 14, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
This cottage may have started life as a bake-house, but it has been extensively and professionally redesigned and rebuilt. It features a half-timbered look which gives it an air of rustic charm, though all the wiring and plumbing is modern and works!
Being unfamiliar with wood-burning stoves, on more than one evening our efforts at ignition caused the smoke alarm upstairs to burst into life, but with practice, this became less frequent.
The sitting area is adequate and comfortable, the dining area all you need. The kitchen includes a multi-fuel hob, microwave oven and a small conventional oven/spit roaster.
There is a refrigerator, a gas heater and electric radiator for quick heat in the mornings.
We would have liked there to have been at least one empty cupboard in which we could have stored our food purchases, and certainly, anyone who enjoys cooking even moderately elaborate dishes will note the absence of measuring jugs, scales, electric whisks, food processors or blenders, though in other ways, the kitchen is well equipped - steak knives as well as kitchen knives (though no steel to put the edge back on them), for instance. An instinctive cook will overcome such hurdles, and - let's face it - most people don't expect to find a holiday cottage with a fully equipped kitchen.
Upstairs there is a good sized double bed, fairly firm, a chest of drawers and a dressing-table, and a small but very well-appointed toilet and shower-room. Hot water in the cottage was lethally hot and there is a clear danger of accidental scalds if one isn't careful. We estimated it was 20-30C above normal domestic hot water temperature, so care was needed when washing or showering.
The location is quiet and very dark at night. Torches might be a good thing to pack if you're likely to be out in the evenings (especially when the nights are drawing in).
Nowhere is within 'reasonable walking distance', and a car (withSat-Nav for preference) is essential.
Finally, the owners live next door. They were very pleasant and helpful, yet not intrusive if you wanted privacy. The advertised availability of wireless Broadband/ADSL just about works (off a router in the owners' house) but could do with a range booster. It is also cringingly slow, around 0.5Mbps.
We never got round to plugging the TV in.
This is an ideal property for a couple wanting a week or two 'away from it all', less than 40 miles from Ouistreham, and handy for visiting the D-Day beaches and towns like Bayeux.
