Zagarolo is about 30 km from Rome between Palestrina and Tivoli. It's a nice medieval village (15.000 inhabitants) with 50 hills around with villas. Zagarolo is a perfect point of departure to visit Rome and the beautiful surroundings, like the Castelli Romani (Frascati and Castel Gandolfo), Palestrina, which is older than Rome and Tivoli with Villa d'Este,Villa Gregoriana and the very famous Hadrian's Villa. The town of Zagarolo was established 2000 years ago. It has kept all its charm in the winding cobblestone streets where the recordings of Pavarotti serenade customers in the numerous little coffee shops. Rent a scooter, a bicycle, a horse and buggy or motorized chariot (exclusive in Zagarolo). And at the same time you can learn a new language and a skill. Stress does not exist in the orchards or the peaceful orchards. Visit Zagarolo, its art galleries and antique shops. Do not miss the excursions to get to know the region.

A Great Visit to Rome

Ruth and Ray Oro Valley, Ariozna USA
Review Submitted: August 24, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had a wonderful stay at Villa il Chiostro in July. There were six adults in our group. It happened to be an unusually hot period in Rome (93 F - 95 F most days) during our stay. However, we found it very comfortable at night when we returned to the house.

The house was well taken care of and very clean. During check-in the owner was very gracious and helpful explaining everything about the house. The location outside of Zagarolo was a good location to visit Rome, Tivoli, and the hill towns south of Rome. We took the train into Rome several days and it was very convenient. The bar by the rail station where we bought our tickets was a good internet point since the villa did not have broadband.

The kitchen was very well equipped and stocked to cook meals. The washing machine was very convenient being located just off the kitchen. There was a very nice balcony just off the study that is shaded in the afternoon. Outside was like a park setting with a lot of open space. There was ample parking for the three cars and a car is an absolute must. The agent, Licia, we dealt with during the renting process was very helpful and answered all our emails very quickly even when we asked general questions.

During the stay Lorenza, the care taker, was very helpful. She lives nearby, speaks very good English and was able to respond to any problem or questions. We had her prepared two meals, with the help of her daughter Sonia, for us during the week. She is an excellent cook and the two dinners were very enjoyable. However, I would recommend that you have her prepare meals early during your stay because both times there was enough food for two more meals.

I think the owner could change the write-up on the web site to clarify that two of the three bathrooms are on the ground floor while three of the four bedrooms are upstairs.

We did go to three very good restaurants: Ristorante Il Giardino in Zagarolo (recommended by the owner), Ristorante A Modo in Palestrina and Restaurant Taverna Quintili in Tivoli.

Peaceful yet in easy reach of Rome

We spend a wonderful week at the villa. Everything was exactly as advertised and the owners were very helpful before and throughout our stay. The town of Zagarolo was a lovely surprise with good restaurants and shops. Best of all: we could enjoy the great city during the day and retreat to the cool and calm of the villa at night.

We stayed here for over 4 weeks, April/May

We have rented about 30 properties in Italy and France and this was the best equipped. There are ample glasses, plates and cutlery and also all the basic condiments one needs in the kitchen. A real bonus.

The house, gardens and the cloister were excellent. The gates are big enough for a Rover 75, the drive-take it slowly and you won't have a problem. There are dogs barking, sometimes irritating but didn't disturb our sleep.

It is just possible to seat 8 around the dining room table but it is very narrow, fine for a plate and a glass but no room for a serving dish. In front of the fire or the television ( a new TV would be a good idea) there is one settee (3 seater) and 2 chairs, watching the TV is difficult for four, more would be impossible.

The downside to renting this house is that there is another property very close and the noise and the lack of privacy was an issue.

We did get fed up the with the boy next door playing football,a party that went on to 5.00 a.m., arguments and and rather loud telephone conversations early in the morning. However, the owners were interested in knowing about this. I hope they will take action.

The area is abound with fascinating villages and towns. I left a stack of notes which I hope will be useful. You couldn't be bored in this part of Italy.

I would recommend this property for the over 55's but the next door neighbours spoilt it for us. I had anticipated getting up in the morning and taking my coffee outside (in my dressing gown) but we learnt that you never knew when someone would appear. Great house, masses to see if you can cope with the neighbours.
If you have a chance to meet Lorenza, the cleaner, make the most of her- I learnt a lot about cooking and her pizzas are to die for.

A definite YES

You need have no qualms about staying at il Chiostro: everything is exactly as described and the photos are accurate and up-to-date (as at Jun 2008). The setting, with the large garden that has many large trees in some parts is very peaceful in the daytime (though it has to be said, there are quite a few dogs in the area who tended to bark at night time ... but you can get used to this after a few days, hopefully). The Cloister itself is a charming feature that you can walk around and sit in to shelter from either sun (or rain?) yet be outside in the open air. In June 2008 the temperatures were 35C to 40C in the daytime so the garden was definitely appreciated. Zagarolo itself did not have any appeal for us, but the house is a few km distant. Villa d'Este at Tivoli is an absolute MUST if you have any interest in beautiful gardens; but at all costs do NOT eat in the first restaurant in the pedestrian zone with outdoor tables - the quality is execrable and matches the price ... in Italy you don't expect Olive Oil to be served in a small tear-off plastic packet! Food shopping is best done at Upim (a few km on the road towards Palestrrina), though there are nearer, smaller, supermercati. The short driveway up to the house is quite uneven and the (open) gates to the house will just about accomodate the width of a hired Ford Focus. The towns in Colle Albani are well worth a visit. Would we go back to il Chiostro ? Definitely ! (If it's cooler)

sehr schönes, ruhig gelegenes Haus in riesigem Garten,
