The Location:
Vilamoura is located approximately 20 - 25 mins west of Faro and can be reached easily by public transport or by renting a vehicle. Approx taxi fare from Faro Airport is 22 -25 euros. To the East, the Spanish border town of Ayamonte is about 40mins away & opens the gateway to a great opportunity for day trips to cities like Seville or Gibraltar. Closer to hand Tavira is one of the oldest towns on the Algarve, an old fishing port immersed in history this really is 'a must do'. The Gypsy market in Loule, about 10mins away is well woth a visit for presents & local handcafts. Haggling is the norm & part of the fun and ambiance.
To the West, the Algarve's world famous beaches & quaint towns like Lagos, Portimao, Sagres and Silves are only a short distance away. Travelling North one has the opportunity to visit the more rugged & very beautiful beaches of the Silver Coast.The capital Lisbon is approx 2hours away & with Oporto just further North again with no shortage of history and culture.
Activities:
A holidaymakers paradise. It really does have something for everyone on it's doorstep. World Class Golf is all around, Water sports such as sailing, power boating and deep sea fishing are immediately available at the marina along with fishing from the shore or just swimming in the ocean at some of the fantastic beaches with their fantastic sandstone backdrops. There is fantastic coastal walks and cycling routes, parachuting / parascending and any amount of activity / water parks for young and old, not to mention the go karting and the facility to take in a show or gamble your life away at the famous casino. If you don't want the trouble of driving or arranging these activities or tours then just visit some of the kisks at the marina and these tours can be arranged with ease and at very reasonable rates.
Touristy Stuff:
Vilamoura is gifted with a fantastic location and a splendid waterfront which boasts scores of fantastic restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and ages. Here you will also find many designer shops and stores, where if your tired shopping you can just sit down and watch the world go by. Figo the famous footballer & one of the more famous people in Portugal can be seen regularly in his bar on the marina front. An amazing pub where you can go and spend hours just looking at the photos and tops of the worlds most famous footballers.
Get away from the marina and into the backstreets and you will find some fantastic restaurants with great food sometimes a lot cheaper also.
For serious shoppers, a short distance away is 'Algarve Shopping' a fantastic shopping mall with great shops &an entire upper floor given over to some really good restaurants. On your way back from there you can drive back past Sir Cliff Richard's home and vineyard. Perhaps not the best wine but there are more !!
