Leisure facilities in and around Maison Rose
Close to Maison Rose, just through the town of Verteilac, there is a very good horse riding school, details of which you will find in the 'HOUSE NOTES' on your arrival at Maison Rose. If you want to take out a canoe for a leisurely afternoon, pop down to Brantome. The River Dronne surrounds Brantome, making it an island and accessible by a couple of small bridges. The picturesque uncrowded river banks offer some lovely spots for a picnic where you can sit and watch the wild life and canoes passing. Better still, hire one yourself and take a leisurely cruise down the river, which is quite safe, slow moving and shallow. There are many restaurants and shops to while away your time all within short walk of each other, and parking is hardly ever a problem. Alternatively explore some of the prehistoric caves, or the ancient Brantome Abbey built into the rocks. A short drive away is the town of Aubeterre with its monolithic church of Saint-Jean of Aubeterre - quite unique.
Surrounding area
* Immediately surrounding Maison Rose is mainly farmland and woods. One of our close neighbouring properties raise deer, which you will normally see on your drive into the town of Mareuil, or even on your arrival to Maison Rose. * GROTTE DE VILLARS – situated about 40 minutes drive from Maison Rose, and a brilliantly interesting place to visit for all ages. This is the largest underground network in the Perigord, with more than 13 kms explored up to this day. The tour starts with a 20 minute video, designed to help you understand the geological phenomena and to make the visit unforgettable, followed by a guided tour through beautiful underground scenery, showing impressive flows of calcite deposits, delicate stalactites, unusual calcite formations looking like fonts, transparent draperies and countless stalagmites. In total, the tour and video show last for about just over an hour. As at summer 2008, admission is adults €7.00 and €4.50 for children (children under 10 go free).
Other Activities On site: swimming pool, table tennis, swings, table top pool, numerous board games.

1) - Dear Lesley, I am sending this brief email just to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 'La Maison Rose'. The quiet and peaceful location was exactly what we wanted. We made quite a lot of use of the table tennis equipment, and would definitely have used the mountain bikes had it not been so hot... as such they remained in the cellar! (By the end of the week the pool temperature was at 92F and, after a 'phone call to Brian, we had to top it up as there'd also been a fair bit of evaporation.) Once again, thanks for your assistance and also for the bottle of wine you left for us on arrival. Regards.
2) - Dear Mrs. Cook, Just a word of thanks for the wonderful stay we had at Maison Rose. However we did not get to sample the many restaurants you recommended - the house and kitchen were so well equipped and comfortable that we stayed at home and ate out on the terrace every evening! Many thanks - we hope to stay there again next year. Regar
