Photos and Description of this Orgiva holiday apartment This self-catering property, reflects the ambiance of the Alhambra Palace

Nestling among the olive groves of Tijola, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the villa Castaño, is a quiet and peaceful retreat. 2 kms from the market town of Orgiva, the white washed Berber villages, can be found clinging to the southern slopes of Spain’s highest mountain range. These were the last outposts of the Moors after the fall of Granada in the 16th century. Made famous in the early 1900's by Gerald Brennan with his book 'South from Granada' and more recently described by Chris Stewart in his best selling book 'Driving Over Lemons' and his sequel “Parrot in a Pepper Tree”, this rural area offers peace and tranquillity with easy access to bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Just 1 hour south of Granada and 2 hours east of Malaga, with the coast and golf only 35 minutes away and skiing in the winter, just 1 hour 15 minutes, the villa has been designed with the 16th century Alhambra Palace in mind, but with all the luxuries and comforts of the 21st century.

freshly squeezed orange juice + roasted chestnuts

Tinka80 Glasgow, UK
Review Submitted: January 27, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
We stayed at Zoe's and Nigel's place around New Year's and enjoyed the stay very much. The house is located on a quiet country road a few miles from the centre of Orgiva. Around New Year's the oranges were almost ripe on the trees and the olive and avocado trees had fruits as well. There are plenty of hiking/hill walking paths in the area to explore the landscape.
We were welcomed like friends and had a room with large en-suite bathroom on the first floor. The room was clean and tidy and had the same moorish feel to it like the rest of the house.
For breakfast (we had booked BB) we were served everything we could ask for including freshly squeezed orange juice from the trees in the garden and fresh chocolate croissants. The 'breakfast-room', living-room with a nice cosy fireplace (in which we roasted chestnuts on a rainy day), and kitchen are the heart of the house in which Zoe ad Nigel live and where there are several rooms for rent as well. There is also a separate building with a seperate entrance which is let for self-catering.
Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed your Bed and Breakfast stay here with us. Fresh orange juice always go down well with the guests! Look forward to seeing you both again, maybe in the summer next time, when you can enjoy the fresh melon and cherry season!

Chilled Out Bliss!

Rach and John Huddersfield. West Yorkshire
Review Submitted: November 5, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
My fiance and I booked a week in October. Right from the start Zoe was more than accommodating in my frequent off the wall questions, date changes and even went to immense trouble to try and find me a local cheesemaking course. Nigel and Zoe's presence is unobtrusive but reassuring.

The apartment is a couple of miles from Orgiva down a narrow road (with some rather worrying gullies down the sides - something to do with the irrigation system, I think) but the road is very quiet and as with all the other roads in the area, despite how hair-raising they look, are well maintained and the local drivers courteous.

I seldom enjoy holidays that have this level of relaxation but both John and I found that we totally absorbed the atmosphere almost as soon as we arrived. We got there extremely late due to flight delays but Zoe and Nigel were there to greet us and give us a full guided tour of the property.

Their attention to detail and design is both subtle but painstaking - and the Moorish theme tastefully carried on throughout the property.

The apartment had everything you would need for a comfortable stay and we were heartened to find a welcome bottle of wine and loaf of bread when we arrived. This had been thoughtfully provided and these little touches were what makes this property stand out.

Having the pool virtually to ourselves was heaven - and spending the day watching the birds and listening to the insects buzzing - bliss. The flies are irritating but unavoidable and don't detract from any of the experience.

There are things to do nearby, Lanjaron and Granada for example are in easy driving distance but we talked ourselves out of many excursions just to swim and chill. Honestly, that's how you feel after a day's relaxation.

What more is there to say. Book it, you won't be disappointed. 10/10!
Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday at Cortijo El Castano (which is only 2.5 kms from the town). You are correct in thinking that the little ditches are part of the irrigation system put in by the Moors and still used today! We can get a few flies when the weather is unusually hot in October/November but they are not as bad as they were on my visit to Cornwall this summer! The weather has continued to be wonderful, we are now the 11th November and we had 30 degrees on the coast yesterday, according to the thermometers in the street! Look forward to seeing you both on your next visit.

Away from the Madding Crowds

janetsd59 Matcham, NSW, Australia
Review Submitted: August 14, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
I just wanted to share with other potential holiday makers details of the most wonderful place to stay in Spain.

Because we live in Australia, this summer we wanted to get together with all of our UK relatives for a week somewhere different and we found it.

This property is just out of this world. It has character, style and wonderful grounds which were perfect for enjoying a glass of cold champagne in the early evening watching the sun set.

We stayed from 14 June to 24 June and the weather was lovely and hot but we could still see snow capped mountains from the swimming pool which was amazing.

The owners, Nigel and Zoe, couldn't be more helpful and they really made sure that our stay was perfect. I would recommend the property to all holiday makers whether you're looking for a big family get together or romantic break.

The property has all different sorts of accommodation which meant that all of our group got exactly what they wanted.

You do need a car of your own to get out and about but it's well worth it as the countryside is so authentic and gives you a real feel of Spain.

And it only takes about 35-40 minutes to get to the Coast and a wonderful game of golf!

For those of you looking to explore Spain, well away from the coastal areas that have become like Blackpool with sun, this is the place to go. We are already talking about booking another trip later this year to see what it's like in Winter.

The property is fantastically well maintained and every room is clean and well serviced. The cooking facilities were excellent and we had no problems keeping all 10 people in our group well fed.

The property has a pool and plenty of room for the kids to play and run around in the sun. We also enjoyed the satellite TV so we could keep up with world news and the sports results for the boys.

We enjoyed the property so much we didn't eat out that much but on the days we did go exploring, we found some fantastic and authentic Spanish restaurants where we got to try the local food which was inexpensive and very tasty.

All in all, we couldn't find anything to fault about this property and can definitely recommend it as we believe its a 10 out of 10 kind of place!
Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to Spain. We really look forward to seeing you again later on this year!

One of the nicest places I have stayed in! Such attention to details, such a warm welcome, a great location to relax and unwind and forget all homely duties. Would recommend it to my friends without a doubt and will be back again!
Owner's Response: Thank you. A real compliment from someone who lives in Marbella, where most things are supposed to be beautiful! Hope to see you again soon.

Beautiful Holiday Home

Raym Truro, Cornwall
Review Submitted: November 26, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Chris Stewart's book "Driving Over Lemons" was what inspired us to visit the area. We were lucky to find Cortijo Castano, a beautiful Moorish style holiday home. The area is stunning and the accommodation has all the home comforts you would want. Very comfortable and tastefully furnished, our first visit will be one of many.
Owner's Response: Look forward to seeing you again soon!
