Nestling among the olive groves of Tijola, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the villa Castaño, is a quiet and peaceful retreat. 2 kms from the market town of Orgiva, the white washed Berber villages, can be found clinging to the southern slopes of Spain’s highest mountain range. These were the last outposts of the Moors after the fall of Granada in the 16th century. Made famous in the early 1900's by Gerald Brennan with his book 'South from Granada' and more recently described by Chris Stewart in his best selling book 'Driving Over Lemons' and his sequel “Parrot in a Pepper Tree”, this rural area offers peace and tranquillity with easy access to bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Just 1 hour south of Granada and 2 hours east of Malaga, with the coast and golf only 35 minutes away and skiing in the winter, just 1 hour 15 minutes, the villa has been designed with the 16th century Alhambra Palace in mind, but with all the luxuries and comforts of the 21st century.

This apartment has been designed to offer flexibility of accommodation, the focus of which is a large private balcony with splendid mountain views. A delightful place to enjoy a BBQ. Bedrooms: one, two or three double bedrooms available all with large fitted wardrobes, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating and luxury bed linen. Each has a TV aerial point.* Bathrooms: one or two available, each beautifully finished with luxury showers, central heating and heated towel rails. Sitting Room: comfortably furnished including TV, video/DVD player, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating. French windows onto large balcony area, with distant views over the small pueblo of Los Tablones and the Contraviesa mountain range. Kitchen: Fully fitted and very well equipped (partly open plan) with large fridge/freezer, dish washer, use of washing machine, electric cooker, hob and microwave.

Whilst not being a large town Orgiva, capital of the Alpujarras holds a weekly market in the town. There are many tapas bars, restaurants and small supermarkets. There are also 2 health food shops and a herbalist pharmacy. Enjoying many fiestas throughout the year, this is very much a Spanish town. Lanjaron is a spa town, where the Spanish have enjoyed treatments for over 100 years. The minerals found in the different waters are said to be an aid for any number of ailments. Visit the fascinating city of Granada with its spectacular Alhambra Palace, and the old Moorish quarters of the Albaicin. Shop in the town centre or just enjoy the hustle and bustle of the street restaurants and cafés in this ancient student town. Just 35 mins away are the relaxing beaches of the Costa Tropical. The white villages built by the Moors have a charm and style unique to this area. Spend the day visiting different villages and discovering some of the local crafts, still practiced in the region.

Great place, great accommodation

Arriving at Villa/apartment Castano near Orgiva we were instantly transformed from tired travellers into relaxed and satisfied holiday makers. Our hosts Nigel and Zoe were welcoming, genuine yet unintrusive.
Our accommodation was splendid with all the comforts of home and all the character of moorish spain - simple yet stylish. The pool. I love the pool! With views of the nearby mountains and olive groves it really was idilic.
The lovely town of Orgiva near by was charming and gave us the option of eating out at some very good restaurants, but we cooked often in our own fine kitchen supplied by the excellent market in town.
Overall, it is a splendid place to stay for couples or families - quiet, beautiful and luxourius - close my eyes and the warm aroma from the evening sun and the gentle pace it reflects still resonates.
Owner's Response: I remember you saying that this area had inspired you to paint again and now you are holding an exhibition of your paintings in London! This places inspires many people to do many things. We wish you every success with your painting and look forward to seeing you again soon.

What an amazing place this is - comfortable, stylish, friendly and extremely relaxing. The accommodation was immaculate and customer service welcoming and warm. We loved our short stay here and it has given us a fantastic taster of an area to which we will definitely return Thanks so very much Zoe and Nigel for all your advice and help too. What a gem!

If you want to get away from it all this is an ideal destination. Set amongst breath taking scenery the property was everything we had imagined and more. There are lots of fantastic walks and so many pretty and remote villages to explore where we found the locals to be very warm and welcoming.

Nigel and Zoe were great (and knowledgeable) hosts and their property is immaculately presented. Definitely on our list for a return visit.

What a wonderful find. We have so enjoyed our brief stay in your idyllic home which surpassed all our expectations. Thank you.

Relaxing getaway away from the crowds

Every time we've stayed at the villa Castano we've discovered a new part of this hidden corner of the Sierra Nevada. The setting is truly beautiful, with fig, olive, lemon and almond trees, not to mention the mountains outside your window. Even on the hottest days a little breeze would spring up in the afternoon. Zoe and Nigel were generous and considerate hosts. The villa has been designed to provide plenty of quiet little spots where you can sit admiring the view or reading a book. There is also plenty of scope for exploration and in the winter we were only half an hour away from the ski slopes. Whenever we need to get away from it all this is where we come. We love it.
