Nestling among the olive groves of Tijola, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the villa Castaño, is a quiet and peaceful retreat. 2 kms from the market town of Orgiva, the white washed Berber villages, can be found clinging to the southern slopes of Spain’s highest mountain range. These were the last outposts of the Moors after the fall of Granada in the 16th century. Made famous in the early 1900's by Gerald Brennan with his book 'South from Granada' and more recently described by Chris Stewart in his best selling book 'Driving Over Lemons' and his sequel “Parrot in a Pepper Tree”, this rural area offers peace and tranquillity with easy access to bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Just 1 hour south of Granada and 2 hours east of Malaga, with the coast and golf only 35 minutes away and skiing in the winter, just 1 hour 15 minutes, the villa has been designed with the 16th century Alhambra Palace in mind, but with all the luxuries and comforts of the 21st century.

The properties consist of a two double bedroom villa and an apartment which are separated by a small private courtyard. This can be rented as a three, four or five bedroom, sleeping from 6 - 10 people. The bedrooms are fitted with ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating and have large fitted wardrobes. The bathrooms are beautifully tiled with luxury fitted showers, heated towel rails and radiators. Kitchens: Fully fitted, modern and very well equipped, with fridge/freezers, electric ovens with grills, gas and electric hobs, washing machine, dishwashers and microwaves. Living Rooms: Comfortably furnished. Ceiling fans, Satellite TVs, video/DVD recorders, wood burning stove (in villa) and radiators. Enjoy the dramatic views of the Contraviesa mountains from the living rooms, terrace and balcony. Outside Area: There are various outside eating and lounging area.

Whilst not being a large town Orgiva, capital of the Alpujarras holds a weekly market in the town. There are many tapas bars, restaurants and small supermarkets. There are also 2 health food shops and a herbalist pharmacy. Enjoying many fiestas throughout the year, this is very much a Spanish town. Lanjaron is a spa town, where the Spanish have enjoyed treatments for over 100 years. The minerals found in the different waters are said to be an aid for any number of ailments. Visit the fascinating city of Granada with its spectacular Alhambra Palace, and the old Moorish quarters of the Albaicin. Shop in the town centre or just enjoy the hustle and bustle of the street restaurants and cafés in this ancient student town. Just 35 mins away are the relaxing beaches of the Costa Tropical. The white villages built by the Moors have a charm and style unique to this area. Spend the day visiting different villages and discovering some of the local crafts, still practiced in the region.

lovely house in a beautiful area

The vila is really a lovely house, with beautiful furniture and Maroccon decoration. Zoe and Nigel have welcomed us very warm, with a drink and a nice swim in the pool. Which was very useful after a long and warm drive.

Also the area is marvellous, with the mountains, the cosy little villages. But also the sea is very nearby, especially the naturist beach at La Herradura was lovely. The little restaurants on the beach had delicious food.

And offcourse Granada is not far away and is a wonderful and interesting city.

We enjoyed our stay very much and we wish Zoe and Nigel a lot of succes with their place.

Wonderful stay

I spent one night at apartment Castano on a B&B basis. The owners Nigel and Zoe have done an amazing job in restoring their wonderful property. The facilities were spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. For me, the added bonus was the delicious breakfast served on the patio with a choice of different organic breads.

Wonderful Stay

What a wonderful weekend break away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. I was amazed at how tranquil and beautiful it all is even though it is just 2 hours from Marbella. The scenery is stunning and the villa is beautfiully decorated and comfortable. Before leaving, I already booked my next stay there, before my friends beat me to it!

A wonderful visit to Spain

Our visit to Spain was a much cherished one. It was made all the more memorable because of the wonderful home of Nigel & Zoe where we stayed. It was classy, clean, and very artistically done. It was a bargain during the off-season. Children had so much space to run around and play. Swimming in the small open pool was an option too. Highly recommended!!!

One Night In Heaven

There's a song 'One night in heaven.' This very short break has been one day and one night in heaven! A utopian getaway. Cortijo Castano is a little piece of paradise and Chris and myself have soaked it all up!!! Thank you for your hospitality and for sharing your little gem of a home with us. Batteries are fully charged again, we're back off to the city and we shall miss the peace and tranquillity. This house is the stuff of dreams and we are already looking forward to our next visit! Thank you.
