The four medieval towers of Uzès, known as ‘the foremost duchy of France’, rise up in the heart of the garrigue (Mediterranean scrubland). ‘Le Duché’ was the name given to this exceptional group of buildings, which is made up of the castle of the Dukes of Uzès, the chapel, the old dwelling house and the majestic Bermonde tower; the rectangular keep built in the 11th century which dominates the town. The Duché d'Uzès, constructed in 1565, and known as the first duchy of France, is the oldest surviving duchy in France. The Duke of Uzès has precedence over all the noble houses in France after the royal family. The most famous Saturday Market in Southern France
