A charming house distinctive for its tall and narrow presence in the middle of Fiumelatte village, nestled between the Fiumelatte torrent and the shores of lake Como, with breathtaking views across the lake and over the “bijou” town of Varenna. The historic Fiumelatte has no cars so the house is accessed by foot (there is a private garage 200 meters away). The house has been entirely renovated by Italian architect Arturo Montanelli, using natural and site-specific materials. The interior is a monochrome of light grey punctuated by minimalist furniture of high quality. The ground floor has a bathroom and living room, the first floor is the kitchen with a spectacular terrace, and the second floor is the master bedroom. The famous Fiumelatte torrent just below the house, and sited by Leonardo da Vinci, gashes only at certain time of the year, usually after the melting of snows or after heavy rain falls. tourorangefiumelattedotblogspotdotcom

The nearby Fiumelatte train station serves local traffic, while Varenna train station, 1,5 km away serves direct trains to Milan. Varenna also has a car-ferry service to Menaggio and Bellagio. By car Varenna is an hour from Milan, an hour from Bergamo, an hour and a half from St Moritz and other ski resorts, two hours and a half from Vals thermes. Other than the road, you can reach Varenna by two beautiful 20min walks.

What a wonderful place to stay. We stayed for a week in September 2009. The local restaurant (Platano) was a delight for afternoon coffee and an evening meal. The restoration of the house is a credit to Jean-Pierre and his wife. The view and the walk in to Varenna compete the package. Must better than the bigger and busier villages.

lovely narrow house with lake view

House was as lovely as the pictures show. The house is really narrow and because of stairs it is not suitable for all but the view from bed room is something to see. Location was good because train station is located at same side of the lake and only 1,5 km far away and trip to Bellagio or Menaggio took only 30 min. The garage was 500m far away but it was large and safe. We will rent the house again when we next time travel to lake Como.
