Tavira is the most beautiful and romantic town in the Algarve. Our house is in the historic centre, near the castle which overlooks the town. Tavira is famous for its pastel-coloured buildings, old churches and the lovely roman bridge that crosses the river Gilao which bisects the town and reflects the beautiful architecture. On either side of the river, as well as in the cobbled back streets behind it are dozens of patisseries, bars and restaurants specializing in the locally caught seafood. The 14km long beach can be reached on foot or by bus/boat from town The stunning Ilha de Tavira beach is about a kilometer out of town, reached by a 5 min ferry ride it has bars and restaurants but is so long that it is never overcrowded. With beaches facing inland as well as facing the ocean you can enjoy calm water or big waves.Nearby towns such as Santa Luzia, Cabanas and Fuzeta are well worth a visit. The Spanish boarder is about half an hours drive away, as are the mountains behind Tavira.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Tavira region, Portugal

Inside the house, ground floor: The house is tiled in terracotta throughout, and has white walls, dark wood and high ceilings, evoking traditional Portuguese style. However it only fifteen years old and has been skilfully designed to meet the needs of modern living. The front door opens into a hallway which runs to the garden at the back of the house. Both bathrooms and three bedrooms, plus the stairs lead off the hall. The first bedroom (9sq metres) is a nice room with bunk beds and a large wardrobe built into the wall, is ideal for children. At the end of the corridor are two larger bedrooms (11 sq metres & 12 sq metres) the larger has two single beds which (with a mattress topper, kingsized sheets and duvet - all provided) can be pushed together to make a very large double bed if required. It has a large wardrobe and a door to the garden. The other bedroom (pictured) has a kingsize bed, large wardrobe built into the wall and French windows that open into the garden. The bathrooms are tiled in traditional s

First floor: The stairs from the hallway open into a large open plan sitting/dining area. On this level is the large balcony (12 sq metres) which has two doors leading back into the living area making it an outside extenion to this area and ideal for eating out as the kitchen is also on his level, next to one of the doors to the balcony. It is furnished, amongst other things, with two large sofas (one a sofa bed) large dining table, and TV The roof is of the traditional pointy Portuguese type (pictured) and the ceilings beneath each peaked roof section go to the very top maybe 20ft high giving a very airy feel to the first floor. The kitchen which leads of the living area has a vaulted ceiling of its own as does the small bedroom which leads off the kitchen (seven sq metres, 1 single bed desk & wardrobe) and has two windows looking over the cobbled streets. The kitchen is well stocked with as much cuttlery, crockery, glasswear & cooking utensils (all modern & matching) as could possibly be ne

Outside: The walled garden (29 sq meters) has a door leading to the street and is reached from the house by the two large bedrooms. It is pleasantly planted and decorated and the bougainvillia is spectacular. It has a steel table and matching chairs (pictured) and is a particularly romantic spot. On the first floor the balcony looks over the town and is furnished with a table and chairs. A staircase leads from here to the roof terrace. The large roof terrace (about 15 sq metres, pictured) is ideal for sunbathing. It gets the sun all day and is ideal for an evening drink, when the birds do aerobatics and the sun can be seen sinking over the horizon. It is furnished with another table, chairs and two nice sunloungers

Nice house in central Tavira

Dawn and John York, UK
Review Submitted: May 20, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
This house is centrally located in Tavira, and is walking distance into the town centre. It was more than big enough for ourselves and our toddler, although probably not perfect for young children as there are a lot of stairs and terraces. When we arrived there was still rubbish in the bin from the last renters (mainly newspapers) and we had to turn both the fridge and the hot water on (which meant we couldn't use the shower or bath our first night there - a bit inconvenient with a young child). We loved walking around the centre of Tavira, and would recommend trying the market (out towards the beach) for buying supplies, as it was much cheaper than the shops in town. Overall a lovely place to stay.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, its the first one we've had. We're glad you had a nice time.

We use a local firm to take care of cleaning, changing towels/linen and any maintenance issues that may arise. We have told them about the un-emptied bin and that the fridge and hot water weren't on when you arrived. Hopefully these problems won't arise in future.

You are right to recommend the market, not only is it good value but it is a fun place to shop with a wealth of fresh produce of every description. On the other side of the river, more or less opposite the market, but a bit closer to the center is Pingo Dolce a good supermarket which can actually be cheaper than the market for some things. Close to our house, is a tiny shop which amazingly sells virtually everything and there is a Lidle which is closer than Pingo Dolce though not so nice.

Lovely spacious house in old Tavira

Orcadians Stromness, Orkney, Scotland
Review Submitted: November 14, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
Our first trip to Tavira was made a great holiday by staying in this lovely house right in the old town. We are a family of four, with two kids aged 11 and 7, and I would happily recommend this house and Tavira to families who want to experience the 'real' Portugal.
Although we had a car, you don't really need one for the house or the town. There is a small local shop just 2 minutes away, which has all the essentials you could need, and there is a larger supermarket just 5-10 minutes walk, located next to the town railway station. I'd also recommend the daily town market, which has every variety of fish you could wish for, along a great range of other foods - you'll probably need to drive to the market, as it's around a 20-30 minute walk from the house. Note that you can't leave your car outside the house, although there is a free car park just 2 minutes walk towards the river.
The house is on two levels, with a further roof top terrace and a small garden, and has everything you could wish for, including deck chairs, outside tables and a barbecue. Inside there is a TV with a dvd player, along with a good selection of disks, books and local guides.
Tavira is a great place to escape to and the beach is amazing; if you can organise the transport, a great day out is to catch the ferry to the eastern end of Tavira island, then walk for five miles along the beach to catch the little train home - don't worry if you miss the train, as there is a path along the side of the railway line.
Memories of our trip include walks through the town, the beach, seashells, the huge numbers of fish in the river, watching bats fly away from the old town walls, and eating fresh tuna steaks along with local wine on our roof top terrace at sunset. We'll be back!

Great Sun Terrace

I love Tavira London
Review Submitted: October 6, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
I’m writing this after my 2nd visit. Tavira’s great, a lovely town with loads of character, and not over-touristy. The house has an private sun-terrace, which is surprising given its central location, and loads of space. It couldn’t be more conveniently situated for the shops and restaurants, but also for the ferry (good fun!) to the fantastic beaches. Will definitely be back again.
Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review, its great to have one from a repeat vistor, hopefully you'll be back again next year!

I'll be back

Brom London
Review Submitted: September 29, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2007
A very spacious and well-maintained property with a nice view over the town. Roof terrace excellent for sunbathing on days when you can't be bothered wandering down to the beach. Shops nearby for basics, plenty of good restaurants in and around town, but cooking facilities in the property are good and it is worth investigating the local market and cooking at home on occasions, particularly with so much fresh fish available. Will definitely stay here again.

Luxus inmitten der Altstadt

G+U Wuppertal
Review Submitted: August 1, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
