Rodalquilar:
One of the quieter areas in the park. It's a small village with a year round population of less than 100. In the summer months this number swells considerably but the tourism is very restrained and select.
There are five restaurants in the village, all worth a visit. Several have very good menus, wine lists.
Several bars add to the available options in walking distance.
The Goldmine perches on the mountain above village. Most of the buildings have been restored and are now home to the Park Centre with its visitor centre, botanical and vulcanism centres. There is also an open air theatre.
Below the Goldmine and just in front of the house there are Botanical Gardens covering over 9Ha (22 acres).
The gardens are open daily and reproduce the diversity habitats that can be found in the park. The combination of plant life and water is big attraction for the local bird and animal life.
Activities:
In the summer months the park organises childrens workshops and open air cinema. There is live music or theatre nearly every night in Rodalquilar or one of the nearby villages. We publish a calendar of events and are happy to make bookings for you.
There are several driveable tracks that take you up behind the gold mine from the village to some interesting locations, such as the El Cortijo de Los Frailes (5km) - the setting for real events of Garcia Lorca's play 'Blood Wedding'. A few kms further is the tiny village of Los Albaricoques - scene of the famous duel For a Few Dollars More (re-enacted each year).
Several marked trails originate in the village and climbing the mountains that surround the village can give stunning views from the snow capped Sierra Nevada to the Moroccan Atlas mountains. This is a cycling and hiking paradise although not perhaps at the height of summer.
Beaches:
There are over 20 beaches and coves within the park in easy driving distance and the majority are unspoilt with no hotels or construction of any type. Los Muertos, Genoves, Monsul and of course Rodalquilar's beach, El Playazo are unmissable.
One of the few Mediterranean marine reserves, the snorkelling and diving is quite stunning. There are several dive outfits in the park including one just 100m from the house. We can arrange single try out dives or longer courses.
There are kayaks and bicycles for hire and kayak tours are available in the summer months.
Further afield
Granada and its Alhambra are an easy day trip by car or train. We can arrange a full day visit or an overnight if required.
