You get the best of both worlds here - Marbella and its long, sandy beaches less than a 10-minute drive away on a fast road and a house in the heart of old Moorish Ojen, a traditional whitewashed Andalucian town set among stunning countryside and mountains. Usually you'd have to drive inland for an hour for this kind of place. But here you can see the sea from the house. Casa Alta has four floors, full of light and Andalucian character, with sea views from the front and mountain views from the back. There's satellite TV, DVD, CD, broadband internet, a fully-equipped and brand new kitchen and bathroom with power shower, wooden floors, log fire - everything to make you feel comfortable. There's also a roof terrace, with a fridge so you can soak up warm evenings with a chilled bottle while watching sunset over the mountains Ojen's idyllic village square, with bars, restaurants, a grocery shop and internet cafe, all set around the church, is a two minute walk from the front door

A 40-minute drive west from Malaga airport, 60 minutes east of Gibraltar airport, Ojén is a classic Moorish ‘pueblo blanco’ (white village), its houses stacked up like sugar cubes against the green hills of the Sierra de las Nieves. Usually you have to drive inland for ages to find this kind of village, but Ojén is just five minutes from Marbella – so you have the best of the Costa del Sol's beaches, bars, restaurants, cinemas, shops on the doorstep, but can retreat quickly to this friendly, typically Spanish village. Within 45 minutes drive are the beautiful Andalucian towns of Ronda and Gaucin and Mijas is 20 minutes away. There are also dozens of great golf courses nearby, a wide variety of sports facilities and the surrounding countryside is wonderful for walking, cycling or exploring by car.

Notes: Just a note of caution that as Casa Alta is a tall, old village house spread across four floors, there are some steep steps which parents might not feel are ideal for very young children. The swimming pool is set at the top of the village, up a steep hill a five-minute drive from the house, with spectacular views across the mountains. It's a lovely and safe pool, open from July to mid September, with a bar and restaurant on site.

What will my life be like without meditation, tai chi, salsa classes, Spanish lessons, intercambio, a party every other day, BBQs in the mountains, walks with the entire village at midnight, church on a Sunday, chess on the plaza and a dozen holistic therapists at my beck and call?! 'The house is modern and fresh while still having a charming degree of original character and individuality. We had absolutely everything we wanted for a relaxing and comfortable stay and help was instantly at hand when we couldn't work out how to change the gas bottle! Utterly enchanting

I stayed at Casa Alta for a whole summer and it fast became a true home from home. Just a two-minute walk from the plaza, the house is perfectly located in a quiet, traditional narrow stone-paved street steeped in olden myths and legends (and top-and-tailed by great little restaurants and tapas bars). Neighbours left oranges, olives and pastries on my doorsteps and championed my ever-improving Spanish. Before long, I had made life-long friends and was invited to weddings, christenings and funerals. This is a great little place to experience Andalusian culture such as flamenco, salsa and fiestas. You'll also find lots of suprising arty touches, such as South American artisans, European painters & writers together with holistic therapies, yoga and tai chi.
