Entertainment:
Cultural and entertainment programs are an integral part of the life of Makarska, especially during the tourist season. The traditional Summer Cultural Festival takes place in July and August, offering rich drama and concert programs, performances of Dalmatian harmony singing groups, art exhibitions, recitals and folk music performances. The most popular events are the Fishermen’s Night and the Night of Kalelarga. The town has dozens of restaurants, taverns, vine cellars and other catering facilities with a rich choice of traditional fish food and beverages. Special attraction is the Malacological Museum situated in Franciscan Monastery with unique collection from the Adriatic sea life that houses a sea shell collection featuring a giant clam shell and its considered one of the most beautiful and richest museum of its kind.
Sports and leisure :
Sports and leisure enthusiast may use numerous playgrounds and facilities for all kind of sports on the ground and in the sea. The tennis camp has nine clay courts, one color set court and two indoor clay courts. This modern tennis centre, situated in a pine forest close to famous beach of Makarska, is often the venue of the main tennis tournaments. Sports and leisure center on the east side of the town (45000 m2) provide facilities for football, rugby, athletics, indoor sports hall, body building, fitness, two tennis courts, volleyball and handball.
There are very pleasant 45 – 60min walking routes, along the beaches to the neighboring villages Tucepi on the east and Krvavice on the west. Mountain lovers may wish to explore one of the hiking trails to the peaks of Biokovo Mountain. Also, there are many water sports facilities such as: water skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, diving, snorkeling, panoramic flights with a flying inflatable boat, whitewater rafting on the river Cetina.
Day Excursions from Makarska:
The position of Makarska enables the visitor to take numerous guided tours to its surroundings mainly during the summer season. These are very good value for money and often combine places which aren't convenient to reach by public transport in a single day. Within the close proximity there are many interesting villages, towns, beautiful islands, and even several national parks and protected parks of nature. Buses will take you to the places such as Dubrovnik (Old City proclaimed by UNESCO world heritage), Split (Diocletian's Palace), Krka Waterfalls (National Park) , Mostar (Old Bridge), Medjugorje (pilgrimage). Tourist boats will take you to the beautiful islands of Hvar and Brac (famous Golden Beach) for a fee of £20/30 euros, lunch included – bbq fish. For braver whitewater rafting is one of the most exciting ways to spend the day out. The only way to reveal the Biokovo Mountin’s hidden gems and truly appreciate the sights, sounds & smells, is to get out there and explore.
