L'Escapade is an ancient village house now commpletely restored to the highest standards. It is situated in a quiet backwater of the listed village of Lagrasse,but with stunning views of the Abbey and Corbieres hills beyond,yet only a few minutes walk from restaurants,cafe,village shops,bakery and adjoining central 'place',with 14th c. Market Hall. A short staircase leads from the spacious entrance hall up to a glorious light and colour filled space soaring up to the roof with mezzanine above. Round an open fireplace sofas give cosy comfort. An elegant dining area seats six comfortably and the kitchen has stainless steel 'Smegg' fittings. Triple French doors lead to a vine covered terrace where a mosaic table and barbecue make for ideal al fresco dining. The mezzanine provides a separate 'Home Cinema' with wide screen TV, DVD player and Sky Box, as well as Broad Band facilities. There are three double bedrooms, one with en suite 'wet room', and a well fitted 'family' bathroom.

Lagrasse is officially classified as 'Un des Plus Beaux Vilages de France' - one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France - a rare accolade! The village, with narrow cobbled streets and mediaeval buildings surrounding the central Place to whose XIVth c. market hall local producers bring their specialities weekly,clusters on the banks of the River Orbieu.A XIIth c.bridge leads to the Abbey, said to have been founded by Charlemagne in the VIIth c. Lagrasse has a rich cultural and everyday life of its own with four excellent retaurants(many others including a two star Michelin) within a short drive,two cafes,epicerie,tabac,doctors surgery,pharmacy & garage plus boutiques,potteries,galleries and tennis courts.During the year there are concerts of all kinds at the Abbey,antique fairs during the Summer on the tree lined Promenade and a renowned annual Book Fair. During the Summer months there is supervised river bathing from a charming 'plage' - and the Mediterranean is only 40 minutes away!

Languedoc Rousillon - Les Corbieres: The landscape of Languedoc Rousillon, and specially of Les Corbieres is among the most spectacular in France. Vine covered undulating valleys rise through pine woods to dramatic limestone cliffs, here and there crowned with the ruins of Cathar castles. The area is steeped in history of battles with invading Saracens, of burning and pillaging of Cathar believers - one feels the drama of the past! Famed for its wine, the Corbieres with its many wine making chateaux and domaines offers many enjoyable wine tasting discoveries. To the West, forty minutes away, lies Carcassonne with its famed walled cite, UNESCO World Heritage site, together with the more modern 'bas ville' -a mere five hundred years old, but alive with shops and restaurants To the East, a little nearer, is Narbonne - in Roman days one of the major cities of the Empire.

The house and village are simply stunning. This is definitely the most relaxing holiday I have had in years. For its size the village has several good restaurants and a good general store.

Swimming in the local river is safe and fun.

The weather was very kind to us and we will definitely return to Lagrasse and will take this house if it is still available.
