Cosy 2 bedroom apartment for holiday rental. Comprises central hallway, opening on to lounge/dining area, kitchen, master double bedroom, 2nd bedroom with single bed plus substantial single sofa bed and a large bathroom. The lounge and 2nd bedroom open on to a private balcony ideal for relaxation and dining (BBQ provided). Prices include preparation of apartment, greeting service where possible, all bed linen and bathroom towels and full cleaning service at departure. No beach towels provided. We feel the apartment is not suitable to unsupervised mobile under 5s due to balcony, nor is it suitable for the elderly or disabled. Access is by stairs only.

Sao Martinho is a little known gem of a resort approx. 1 hour north of the capital, Lisbon. Whilst the Atlantic pounds neighbouring surf beaches, Sao Martinho is situated in the shell shaped inlet that provides safe bathing and warm waters. Surrounding places of interest include: Nazarre - bigger fishing port and resort, Obidos - Walled town with annual Medieval Fayre (July), Foz do Alreho - surfers beach with cafes/restaurants.

Getting to São Martinho from the UK: The easiest way from the UK is to fly to Lisbon and hire a car. São Martinho is about an hours drive north on good motorway, with toll of around 6€. Airlines flying to Lisbon from the UK are: Birmingham International - Bmibaby. London Gatwick - Monarch Scheduled, Tap Air Portugal. London Heathrow - BA (British Airways), Tap Air Portugal. London Luton - Easyjet. Manchester - Thomsonfly. Ryanair flys to Porto from Liverpool and Stanstead. This is about 200 km north (130 miles/2 hours) drive on partial toll roads. There is also an express bus service from the centre of Lisbon.

Staying at a real home, rather than a purpose built holiday home with all of their compromises on space, was a real joy.

This flat is perfectly situated locally for the sheltered bay as well as the Atlantic coastline just a few minutes walk away. It is also a good base from which to explore some of the fasinating historic attractions by car.

The drive from Lisbon airport was easy but we made the mistake of using a hire company that did not have an office on the airport itself! This lost us a good deal of time.

High season holiday (return visit)

Enjoyed the holiday just as much as first time - facilities good and well-located. Terrific balcony which is not overlooked. Beach, shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Parking not a problem. Nice to stroll along the seafront or the boardwalk through the dunes. Still plenty of choice for days out (this time we went to Caldas da Rainha, Batalha, Peniche). Easy to spend whole time in San Martinho - hot weather, clean beach, calm sea, lovely swimming. Obviously a popular place, but not too crowded. Would recommend it.

Week in May

The apartment was great – nice size rooms, well-furnished (comfortable bed/sofas, proper storage etc). Excellent balcony with sturdy sun-loungers/dining furniture and wide-open views (plus a handy external drying area off the kitchen), well-equipped kitchen and bathroom. We appreciated the books, local guides, DVDs, music, TV/Sky, and the well-lit, clean, clutter-free foyer and stairwell. It’s in a quiet residential area with unrestricted parking immediately outside. All amenities within a very short easy walk over level ground. We liked the real ‘home-from-home’-ness about it and found it easy to spend a relaxing time here - plus a smooth problem-free transaction with the owners (if anything they undersold it).

The resort has a nice feel about it – quiet but not dull, with a choice of shops, cafes and restaurants etc – it is obviously ‘open for business’ (beach was groomed every night) even in off-season May.

Sao Martinho is very attractive (natural, sheltered bay, dramatic headland scenery, ‘old town’ area) and is being improved – great boardwalk through beautiful aromatic sand-dunes, classy-looking outdoor swimming pool (unfortunately still under construction when we were there), a re-surfaced safety-conscious beach-side road, new shops opening. . . with lots of interesting places to visit nearby and good road system, this is a great holiday destination.

Short break in May

I stayed at the appartment for a short break in early May. The appartment was very clean, well furnished and comfortable, sitting on the balcony for simple breakfast of fresh baked bread and jam highly recommended. Getting to Sao Martinho from Lisbon airport was a fairly simply drive up the A8 motorway.

The weather was lovely, warm but not too hot. Sao Marthino is lovely, the bay is beautifull, restaurants are friendly and serve superb sea food. Also the pizzeria overlooking the bay was fantastic.

The surrounding area is full of interest. Just a short drive away Nazare is well worth a visit, the views of the village and it's beach from the top of the funicular railway are stunning.

All in all this was a highly enjoyable short break, I would recommend the appartment and resort to anyone.
