La Boheme is situated in the stunning Montagne Noire. An area that is marked by the diversity of vegetation due to influences from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. You can observe at a distance of a few miles completely different vegetation and completely different climatic influences. In the Orbiel valley, you have a Mediterranean influence that makes the mimosa bloom. A few miles west, due to a more wet climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, beech trees and epiceas are growing. The nearest largest towns are Carcassonne to the south and Mazamet north. When you visit the fortified town of Carcassonne you are transported back to the Middle Ages. The cité of Carcassonne a UNESCO world heritage site is the largest medieval fortress in Europe and has 14 towers. Nearby are the historic Cathar strongholds of Lastours, mountaintop Chateaux that date back to the 12th Century. In the valley of the Orbiel, there are four small castles each built on a large 300m high rocky ridge.
