Magrana is Catalan for Pomegranate, which grow in the large tropical garden. The Villa built in 1975 has white rendered walls, tiled floors and a pan tile roof with an extensive balcony. Many rooms have french windows but all have a view of the beautiful countryside. Mas Magrana is in a peaceful rural location, surrounded by Orchards with little passing traffic. There is a large garden with an orchard, an old vineyard and a vegetable garden that visitors have use of. The grounds are a haven for a huge variety of wildlife. It is an ideal self-catering rental for a relaxing summer holiday with friends or family. Chill out by the large 12.5m pool or use it as a base to explore the Pyrenees or visit the beaches of the Mediterranean at Colliure or Argeles. Despite the tranquil setting Mas Magrana is conveniently situated only a 5min drive away from the small town of Ceret, and accessible to a range of airports; Perpignan 40min, Gerona 45min, Barcelona 90 min. The area has been popular with artists since the 30's and the beautiful countryside and old town has been the inspiration for many of artists work displayed in world renowned modern art gallery including Picasso and Chagall. Don’t miss the Saturday market where there is good range of produce most of it local. It's a great opportunity to people watch as are the numerous festivals and summer music events. The biggest of these is the Feria on or around the 14th July with a massive range of entertainment including concerts, exhibitions and bull fighting! If you can drag yourself away from the pool, alternative suggestions include visiting the local vineyards - the wines of Rousillon are fantastic value; or the beaches and water parks of Argeles & St.Cyprien; or the picturesque harbours of Collioure, Banjuls & Port Vendres (excellent fish market). Cross the border into Spain and visit the Costa Brava. Figures is half an hour away and home of the Dali museum, Barcelona only 90 min!

Skiing & Kite Surfing: Skiing -Good cross country, downhill & snow boarding available in the winter season, in France (Les Angles/ La Llagonne) , Spain (La Molina) and Andorra (Soldeu / Arinsal). Snow kiting -This new winter sport can be undertaken at La Llagonne close to Font Romeu in the Pyrenees; ask us for web link.

Sky Diving: Only 40 minutes from Ceret in Spain on the Costa Brava one can find the town of Empuriabrava. In the 70’s they drained the marshy land to create a network of houses and villas all with their own water access. The architecture is not to everybody’s taste but it is home to one of Europe’s foremost Sky diving centres or dropzones, attracting the very best Sky divers from around the world. The sport can be sampled by doing a ‘tandem’. Should you just wish to watch, we suggest visiting in the evening; site on the terrace of the club house enjoy a drink and watch the spectacle. Aim to be there by about 7.30pm, go earlier if you wish to sample the thrill. Booking required at weekends. Please ask us for websites addresses.

Swimming and adventure playground: Apart from swimming in the sea, there are numerous freshwater lakes on both sides of the border that are great for swimming. The closest is in St Jean Plat de Cours, but Darnius over the border in Spain is great too. At St Jean there is also an adventure play ground with death slide children - Les Aventuriers de Saint Jean, Tel : 06 71 60 37 44.

We spent a week in Ceret in the middle of September. Our time coincided with the Festa Major de Sant Ferreol and an associated 20km or 5km running race, Le Ronde Ceretane. There are festivities lasting the whole weekend based at St Ferreol (well worth a visit via the path up the hill ) and the town itself. The fireworks on the Saturday were amazing with people dressed as devils and pushing fire breathing bulls were running round the ( cordoned off) streets holding fireworks in their hands. There were also communal meals that you need to book in advance and special menus in the restaurants. There was a great atmosphere for the race with different bands playing on every corner. If you like walking the tourist office has a great leaflet on local walks with varying degrees of difficulty. Instructions for the St Ferreol one are in it. We had a great time and I intend returning with some friends to take place in the 20K race.

Crickets, Cicadas and Canigou

We found Mas Magrana to be everything we expected and more - a lovely house in a very tranquil, beautiful location. The wild creatures/birds were very interesting, and 2 weeks was not enough time to fully explore the area and its surrounds. All the facilities worked, the property was clean and tidy and everything you would need to hand for an enjoyable stay. We would recommend this property, and liked all places/restaurants we visited, and only wished we had more tiime to spend there.

Mas Magrana

We had a wonderful time at the Mas Magrana. It is just outside Ceret (a lovely town with a great atmosphere) and really is 30 mins from the sea, with masses of places to explore within an hour.

The house is not smart but comfortable with a lovely balcony looking out over the trees with beautiful views, and sun morning and evening. It was a great place to stare at the stars in the evening. The best bit was the pool which is fantastic, and very warm thanks to the pool cover. From the pool you have an amazing view of the mountains and often you can hear the golden orioles. We much enjoyed the figs, tomatoes and courgettes from the potager. There is a good sized pretty garden which looks out over fields and orchards. We enjoyed playing petanque and we had some delicious barbeques in the evening in front of the house.

We were concerned that the property is quite close to the road but there really is very little traffic and we did not feel overlooked at all. It was actually really nice to be 5mins from the centre of Ceret and after experiencing some of the more adventurous mountain roads we were rather relieved that the villa was not too far from the beaten track! The view of Canigou as you set out is breath taking.

This is a wonderful area with so much to see. We recommend sea kayaking at Banyuls, swimming at Collioure, the little Church of St Martin, the Priory at Serrabona and the Dali Museum at Figueres (despite the queue!). The Ceret Market is great fun and so is the Thursday market at Amelie. We hope to come back, perhaps to climb Canigou...
