Not JUST McDonalds, but also Kandinsky!: Cafés, sandwich bars, laiteries, salons de thé, ice cream parlours and restaurants serving plain basic Moroccan meals abound along the Route Malabata as you go west. Most cafés serve omelettes for breakfast.
Look for fine dining further into town, although the newly opened Panorama Café opposite with a prime location overlooking the bay serves a range of light dishes. Next door, virtually on the beach, you'll find Bio-Grill, an echo of Restaurant Populaire in the medina, serving a fixed 3 course menu of home cooked food at the relatively modest price of 200 dirhams.
Kandinsky, a little further along the boulevard, is one of the must-visit places in Tangier. The ice cream sundaes and crèpes just might defeat you. The waiters are charming and have character. They all speak a variety of languages. You can also pick up the pocket guide to Tangier at Kandinsky.
And yes, McDonalds is right opposite the apartment.
Places to visit: The Kasbah and the Medina, housing a warren of streets and markets of old Tangier, are star attractions. Unless you have an acute sense of direction, it might be good to pick up a guide the first time. Haggling is expected. Start at just under half the asking price, or even less, and see what happens.
Some shops do charge fixed price but this is usually shown as a notice in the window. Looking for something really authentic? Ask to go to the Bazar Phoenicien.
The American Legation Museum is well worth a visit.
You can walk to the Kasbah and the medina, but you will probably prefer to take a petit taxi, the small turquoise cabs with a yellow stripe along the side. Agree the price before you set off. In March 2011, I paid 40 dirhams for a trip from the apartment to the Kasbah.
Try to get out to Cap Spartel to catch some fresher air and see the Atlantic rolling in, while the grotto of Hercules has a distinctive opening. Enjoy baked sardines in one of the cafés on the terrace.
