Casa Agricola da Levada is a family owned farmhouse with 6 hectares of wine yard and garden. Six 17th century granite stone houses totally renewed are spread in the terraced garden. This charming country home is just outside the town of Vila Real, up a long, tree-lined avenue that shields it from the road. 'Casa da Varanda' is a two bedroom cottage overlooking the Corgo River. The house is tastefully decorated with antiques combining the traditional construction from the north of Portugal with modern comfort. This is lovely spot for those who wish to combine the quiet of country life with easy access to the town and Region. Just 3 Kms from Casa de Mateus, 15 mns driving from the heart of the Douro Valley and River, 8 kms from Alvão Natural Park with its beautiful granite stone pools and waterfall. Fantastic hosts, who went our of their way to help whenever we asked for it. Make sure you eat up at the house on at least one occasion!

A tranquil setting in an urban location just on the edge of Vila Real - when driving around the town you can see a green oasis which is the location of the house and grounds. The owners have refurbished original out-houses into each of the rental villas. Our kids enjoyed walking the 200 metres down through the garden to the swimming pool. The walkways to each individual villa was rustic in itself - need to carry suitcases through trails carved through granite rocks!

Make sure you visit Mateus House, swim in the local river, and ride on Fantasticable (details in the guest books). the kids really enjoyed the latter.
It was a very hot summer, peaking at around 35C in vila Real.
Our first visit to the region, and this turned out to be a good central location to tour both east and west along the Duoro Valle, as well as a day trip to Porto.

If there was one criticism, it would be that the main dual-carriageway A-route was very close to one side of the site, although the traffic calmed down in the evening and nightime.Can't do much about that though!

Um pedaço de campo dentro da cidade de Vila Real. Uma propriedade antiga recuperada com bom gosto.
Acorda-se com os passarinhos a cantar e levam-nos o belo pão da zona para o pequeno almoço.
A simpatia dos donos ( Ricardo e Inês ) e dos colaboradores é inexcedivel.
Tem bom vinho e vinha, também.
Recomendo vivamente para quem quer descansar do ritmo louco das cidades.

Really - there's nothing at all to find fault with - this was a most wonderful holiday.

The accommodation we stayed in is that one in the picture - beautifully and tastefully renovated and furnished. Self catering is a breeze with the well equipped kitchen and shops within a five minute drive, though the meals available up at the house were so great we found ourselves there almost every night of our 7 night stop. Ines and co are so friendly - they joined us at the table some nights in the lovely courtyard dining area for the most gorgeous home cooked food - our nine year old who is very fussy ate everything, above all the soups!

There's a top class pool, very well maintained, pretty walks to be had and private gardens to relax in - all within the grounds of the house. Within a short journey are many local treats - a wonderful natural park, Casa Mateus etc. Vila Real is a very pretty little town that we enjoyed exploring - we also took a trip through some spectacular scenery up to the Spainish border.

We can't recommend this place highly enough - really and truthfully. It is a magnificent spot for a family holiday (our children were 8 and 12 at the time) as it is the perfect balance of 1st class amenities, beautiful surroundings and friendliness - Ines, Ricardo and Anna felt like family by the time we had to leave, and we'll be going back just as soon as we can.
