Ski:
Val Disere is at the centre of the skiing and apres-skiing universe in many people's minds. For sheer breadth of terrain there are few rivals. The lively, pretty alpine village is surrounded by one of the biggest, highest, most snow sure ski areas in France, plus probably the best lift-served off piste in Europe, all accessed by one of the most sophisticated lift systems in the world (thanks to the 1992 Olympics). Most people prefer to stay in Val which is far gentler on the eye than Tinges, its linked neighbour. The exceptional snow record means the resort opens in the last week in November each year, weeks earlier than other alpine resorts, and always hosts the season opening men's World Cup downhill on 11th -12th December each year. Ski conditions remain very good through April and summer skiing is even available on the glacier.
