Guest comments: Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Carsebuie. We all thought it was the perfect cottage both in situation and furnishing - a real home from home. It certainly was well equipped - everything we needed was there. Anne Leech and Family Easter 2008

Cycling and mountain biking: Carsebuie is well located for a mountain biking holiday. The most local trails of the internationally acclaimed championship 7 Stanes trails can be accessed at Kirroughtree visitor centre, just East of Newton Stewart. Why not visit during one of the 7 Stanes mountain bike championship competitions. Bikes can be hired from the visitors' centre or deliverd to your door if you do not wish to bring them with you. A lockable shed is available for storing bikes and plenty of room to work on your bike in the dry. Cycling around the area near Carsebuie will give you a great opportunity to experience the beautiful scenery close at hand, and no engines to scare off the wonderful wildlife.

Galloway Dark Sky park: Galloway Forest Park was awarded a gold status for the darkness of the sky over an area covering around 75,000 hectares, scoring 23, the highest possible score inland. This means stargazers and astronomers can enjoy amazing displays of stars, planets and shooting stars, as well as northern lights. With over 7000 visible stars on a clear night you can identify many constellations no longer visible in towns and suburbs.

Golf: There are 30 golf courses all within a reasonable distance from the cottage. Most notable courses are at Turnberry (33 miles from Carsebuie). But Dumfries and Galloway boasts a range of 28 high standard well kept courses 5 of which are links courses, all are in quiet, beautiful locations with splendid views, from as near as 8 miles. Green fee prices range from £12 at a local course to £210 at Turnberry.

A perfect and memorable holiday

Granny Barbara Lincoln, UK
Review Submitted: January 14, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
We were late arriving and the owner met us in the lane so she came back to show us around and made sure we had everything we needed. A card and bottle of wine along with flowers and eggs were left on the table along with all the instructions for the wood burner, washing machine etc and the storage heaters. It was a really welcoming touch.

This is by far the best cottage I have ever stayed in. It was so well equipped for 4 generations of us. It far exceeded our expectations. We even had champagne flutes to drink from and Cds to listen to ... very relaxing. The beds were so comfortable I was tempted to lie in more than I had intended when there is so much to do in this stunning part of Galloway.

It was clean and very nicely decorated. We were thrilled to find extra touches like a change mat and baby bath for my granddaughter, and extra candles for the dining table where we enjoyed our gourmet meals of local seafood and haggis with whisky.

The kids loved the bats and the hare and the fun toast rack made from stone, and of course the barn and the table tennis. It made it so much more restful for the adults knowing they were playing happily in the games barn on the day when it started off a bit drizzly.

The dogs were so exhausetd from their long walks and swims in the sea they were as good as gold and didn't even disturb our long eared friend the hare who visited us. We walked up hills and through glens and just loved the clean air and big skies. At night the stars were so clearly visible we had fun trying to name them. None of the beaches were too busy and parking was easy.

This is certainly a fabulous location for kids as well as adults. The kids bikes were well used so it was worth bringing them, and the adults hired some for a forest ride at Kirroughtree and it was great fun doing so many things together. We found the Galloway Arms in Newton Stewart and the Steampacket Inn in Isle of Whithorn very good. Child friendly and good food.

If you are looking for peace and quiet this is about the best you can get. With the family it was great fun and there was plenty of space for all 10 of us plus baby. But you could easily take Carsebuie for just two people and feel completely refreshed and invigorated at the end of your stay. My daughter is planning to return with her husband and the baby and some friends in the spring. I can imagine how beautiful it would be there in spring.

I would definitely recommend it. 10/10.
Owner's Response: We are delighted Barbara and her family enjoyed their stay at Carsebuie and got to use the champagne flutes - Cheers!

A 4 generation party is a good test for us and we love to get your feedback. It is thanks to the little notes our guests have left us in the early days or the suggestions over the phone or email we have been able to get such a lovely review. So thank you to Barbara and all our guests who have stayed at Carsebuie.

We set out to provide comfort and a cosy atmosphere where our guests could relax and absorb the wonderful environment and culture of Galloway.

We do try to provide for all ages and it certainly helps our guests when they don't need to bring everything but the kitchen sink. Seeing guests unload all the paraphernalia that comes with babies and young children made us realise we could ease the load a little by providing a baby bath and a change mat. Our guests with babies do seem to appreciate this.

The wet room has proved popular with the older generation time and again. When we considered installing it we had visions of mountain bikers and children washing off mud and sand, but we also hoped our less active guests would make good use of it. For one couple, the wife jokingly told me they had a wonderful time visiting Galloway's gardens and beaches but the wet room was the highlight of their holiday, as getting in and out of a bath was not so easy any more.

The table tennis has been a real hit, not just with young children. We are installing a black board in the games barn to allow players to keep score as I understand a few of our guests held a tournament. What a good idea.

We always hope for a good dry summer and being near to the coast, if you don't want to play table tennis you can usually dodge the rain by heading for the beach at Rigg Bay, but who cares if it rains sometimes. Galloway wouldn't be so beautiful without it . . .

Fantastic location

Review Submitted: February 5, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
Very peaceful setting yet reasonably close to facilites

Bedrooms very good standard & comfortable, living quarters and kitchen not up to scratch - scruffy.

Location recommended
Owner's Response: Fantastic Location

I have to agree that Carsebuie is in a fantastic location and I am pleased that the bedrooms are considered to be of a high standard. I am not sure how to reply to the comment regarding the kitchen and living areas as all comments to date have been to the contrary and I don't really have enough to go on. But I have made a mental note . . .' Must try harder'.

Perhaps what we consider to be an informal and relaxing Country Living style would not be appropriate in a modern town house, but chrome, glass and granite while beautiful is not entirely suitable for a country holiday cottage. Plus I confess that on first sight of Carsebuie I new that I wanted to keep the decor as simple and uncluttered as possible so as not to detract from the fabulous views and the charm and history of the place.

Our housekeeper always checks that the cottage is clean and tidy ready for our guests. As Carsebuie has only been available to let since Sept 2007 and the entire interior was professionally decorated and all appliances and furnishings in the kitchen were new then, they won't have had a lot of use yet. Also new furniture everywhere except a handful of antiques and an old pine blanket chest to take the duvet for the sofa bed.

In the living room we have washable cotton covers on the sofas to protect them from mud, paws, spills and sticky fingers, and I admit that these are not as smart as tailored covers. But accidents do happen so we have to be practical, especially considering Carsebuie's capacity to sleep 10 guests plus infants and dogs.

We have wooden flooring in the kitchen and living areas as they too are easy to maintain. But we also hope this means that our guests won't be worrying about the occasional bit of mud in the living and kitchen areas, especially as we want our visitors to take full advantage of the excellent outdoor activities on offer year round.

Carpets are never the same when they have had to be cleaned, and we want parents to feel that the place is hygienically safe for toddlers. We therefore request that dogs and muddy footwear are not allowed in bedrooms and carpetted areas of the cottage but otherwise there are few rules.

As our guests who stayed last Easter put it, Carsebuie is 'A superb cottage - lovely setting. A home from home'. That's what we want all our guests to feel about Carsebuie so we will strive to make that possible.
