Alvor is a working fishing village and still retains the charm and typical characteristics of the Algarve. The town boasts a blue flag beach with miles of stunning golden sands and a boardwalk with beachside cafes offering full facilities. Views over the river estuary at the harbour promenade are best enjoyed with a peaceful drink at one of the cafes. The regular local bus service is great for exploring nearby Portimao with its range of shops, restaurants and culture. Trips can be made to the mountains at Monchique where, from the summit, you can see all the way to the coast. There is a large shopping mall to be found at Guia heading East and a selection of water parks and the renowned Zoomarine in the same direction. Heading West will take you to Cap St Vincent and the most westerly point of Europe. The sea views from here are breathtaking and this area is well worth a visit. The road to the cap will take you past some lovely towns and villages such as Lagos and Sagres.
