Situated in a country village, in the beautiful Serchio valley, north of Lucca, our simple but comfortable house is the ideal base for a relaxing or cultural holiday. The house has outside sitting areas in both sun and shade, and a terrace which is ideal for breakfasts and barbecues. The traditional thick wall construction keeps the house cool in summer, and there is a wood-burning central heating system for other times of the year.

Piegaio is a village of about 1,000 people, and is in the hills above the walled city of Lucca, which is about 20 minutes drive away. To the north is the Garfagnana National Park, which offers excellent walking of all levels, from gentle strolls in the woods to challenges hikes along river gorges. An hour to the north is Tuscany's only ski resort, Abetone. Piegaio itself has a general store, a bar, a pharmacy and a post office. There is also a good restaurant 10 minutes walk away. The beach at Lido di Camaiore is a 50 minute drive away. Florence, Siena and Cinque Terre are all within easy reach for a day trip.

Activities: Piegaio is a perfect base: there are outdoor activities such as swimming and walking, as well as plenty of cultural opportunities. Lucca is the home of Puccini, and there is a concert given every evening featuring his music. Lucca is a treat: we cannot say you will be the only visitors, but it is much less busy than Florence, and its traffic-free (almost) centre has a lot to offer. There are over 20 vineyards within easy reach, and most produce their own olive oil as well as wine. We have found many excellent restaurants at all price levels, from homely trattorie, up to the famous La Mora in nearby Ponte Moriano.
